The Forklift Mechanic will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical and LP/gas-powered forklifts and material handling equipment to support safe and efficient food distribution operations.

Job Description

The Forklift Mechanic diagnoses, repairs, and performs preventative maintenance on a wide range of material handling equipment, including internal combustion (LP, gas, diesel) and electric forklifts. This role ensures all equipment operates safely and efficiently, minimizes downtime, and strictly follows OSHA safety standards while supporting both warehouse and field operations.

Responsibilities

  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic issues on internal combustion and electric forklifts using advanced diagnostic tools and wiring schematics.
  • Perform preventative maintenance, including routine inspections, lubrications, adjustments, and scheduled services to extend the lifespan of lift trucks and other material handling equipment.
  • Dismantle, repair, and reassemble forklifts and related equipment, including engines, transmissions, mast attachments, braking systems, and other critical components.
  • Repair and maintain battery chargers, service industrial batteries, and troubleshoot DC and AC motors to ensure reliable equipment performance.
  • Conduct thorough safety inspections on all forklifts and material handling equipment before approving them for return to active use on the work floor.
  • Maintain accurate and legible maintenance and repair records using service software or work orders, ensuring all work is properly documented and traceable.
  • Manage parts usage by accounting for used components, tracking van or shop inventory, and coordinating with the parts department to order and replenish stock.
  • Operate and work from a service van at the customer site, performing most work outdoors or in bay areas while adapting to changing weather and environmental conditions.
  • Apply strong troubleshooting skills to both stand-up and sit-down forklifts and other material handling equipment, resolving issues efficiently and safely.
  • Follow all applicable safety procedures and OSHA guidelines while working in active warehouse and shop environments.

Skills

  • Minimum 2–5 years of experience diagnosing and repairing forklifts or similar heavy mobile equipment; ideally 3–5 years of experience at a level II technician capability.
  • Proven ability to troubleshoot and repair material handling equipment, including both stand-up and sit-down forklifts.
  • Strong working knowledge of hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems as they relate to forklifts and material handling equipment.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, maintenance logs, and wiring schematics to support accurate diagnostics and repairs.
  • Experience performing preventative maintenance, repairs, and overhauls on internal combustion (LP, gas, diesel) and electric forklifts.
  • Proficiency in using diagnostic tools, mechanic hand tools, and service software or work order systems.
  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Forklift Operator License or the ability to obtain one, along with any required limited maintenance or state driver’s licenses.
  • Physical ability to frequently lift and maneuver heavy parts (up to 75–100 lbs.), stoop, crouch, and work in varied physical and environmental conditions.
  • Comfort working primarily outdoors or in open bay areas, including in varied weather conditions.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in active, fast-paced warehouse environments and repair shops.
  • Hands on exp with hydraulics, mechanical repair, and forklift-specific systems.
  • Strong attention to detail in documenting work performed and maintaining accurate service records.
  • Capability to manage parts and inventory from a service van or shop environment.
  • Ownership of and proficiency with a comprehensive set of personal mechanic hand tools.
  • Comfort participating in virtual interviews and communicating clearly through remote platforms.

Work Environment

This is a full-time role with a Monday through Friday schedule from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. You work primarily at an active customer site, operating from a company service truck equipped with tools and parts. The position involves working in both fast-paced warehouse environments and repair shops, with approximately 90% of the work performed outside or in bay areas. You must be comfortable working in various weather and environmental conditions while maintaining high safety standards and professionalism on site. Dress and appearance should be appropriate for an industrial warehouse and shop setting, including suitable workwear and safety gear as required.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $32.50 - $32.50/hr.
