Tow Truck Driver PT position
Position Summary: We are seeking a safety-focused, experienced Tow Truck Driver with a valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) to transport ambulances and other hospital fleet vehicles between hospitals, maintenance facilities, storage yards, and job sites. The ideal candidate will perform vehicle recovery, secure loading/unloading, basic vehicle inspections, and maintain accurate transport records while adhering to hospital policies and state/federal regulations.
Key Responsibilities:
- Safely operate tow trucks (flatbed and wheel-lift) to transport ambulances and light/medium hospital vehicles to/from hospitals, repair shops, storage locations, auctions, and other sites.
- Load, secure, and unload vehicles using proper tie-downs, chains, and safety equipment to prevent damage during transport.
- Conduct pre- and post-trip vehicle inspections; report and document any mechanical issues, damage, or safety concerns.
- Complete accurate transport logs, mileage, fuel and time records, and incident reports in accordance with hospital and DOT requirements.
- Coordinate pick-ups and deliveries with Fleet Operations, maintenance staff, and external vendors; maintain timely communications about ETA and delays.
- Perform basic roadside recovery and winching operations when required; safely remove disabled vehicles from roadways.
- Ensure tow truck and equipment are kept clean, serviced, and stocked with required tools and safety gear.
- Comply with all federal, state, and local transportation regulations, hospital policies, and infection control protocols (when working near patient areas).
- Respond to after-hours calls and participate in on-call rotation as required.
- Perform look overs on finished repaired vehicles while also making sure they are delivered and ready, to be put back in service.
Qualifications:
- Valid CDL Class A or B (specify per hospital requirement) with a clean driving record; endorsements as required by state (e.g., air brakes).
- Minimum 2 years commercial towing, transport, or heavy equipment driving experience
- Experience operating flatbed and wheel-lift tow trucks, winches, and related recovery equipment.
- Familiarity with DOT regulations, load securement standards, and vehicle inspection procedures.
- Ability to read maps/GPS and follow routing instructions.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
Skills and Abilities:
- Strong safety awareness and commitment to safe driving and load securement practices.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills; able to coordinate with hospital staff and vendors professionally.
- Ability to work independently, prioritize tasks, and manage time effectively.
- Basic mechanical aptitude for troubleshooting and reporting vehicle issues.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lbs, perform repetitive bending, climbing on/off trucks, and work outdoors in varied weather.
Working Conditions:
- Shift work: TBD
- Travel between hospital campuses, repair shops, and other locations within the service area.
- Occasional exposure to roadway hazards and inclement weather.
Pay Transparency:
The above reflects the anticipated base salary range for this position if hired to work in New Jersey.
The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate’s educational background, skills, and professional experience.
In addition to base salary, this position may be eligible for clinical certification pay and/or shift differentials.
