Position Summary:
UrbanPromise Academy (UPA) seeks a passionate and skilled English educator who is committed to inspiring high
school students to grow in their reading, writing, and analytical skills. The ideal candidate will thrive in a small,
community-based learning environment where they can build strong relationships with students, differentiate
instruction, and prepare students to become critical thinkers and engaged citizens.
Essential Job Functions:
Key Responsibilities:
 Mission Alignment

 Instructional Planning & Delivery

• Assess student skills in reading, writing, grammar, and comprehension.
• Build upon an existing curriculum and design lesson plans that are engaging, student-centered, and responsive to diverse learning needs.
• Implement differentiated instructional strategies to meet the academic needs of all students.

 Student Assessment & Academic Progress

• Develop and apply effective methods for assessing student learning.
• Review, grade, and provide feedback on student work.
• Document and communicate academic progress regularly via the school’s student information system.
• Maintain open communication with students and parents/guardians regarding academic performance.

 Classroom & Behavior Management

• Establish and maintain a safe, positive, and inclusive learning environment.
• Clearly communicate and consistently enforce classroom expectations and schoolwide behavior policies.

 College & Career Preparation

• Work closely with 11th and 12th-grade students to develop compelling and effective personal statements for college and scholarship applications.

 Professional Engagement

• Participate in ongoing professional development and training opportunities.
• Serve as a Huddle Coach (homeroom advisor) to support a grade-level cohort.
• Maintain an organized, clean, and welcoming classroom environment.

 School & Community Involvement

• Attend and actively contribute to weekly staff meetings, monthly all-staff meetings, and periodic events.
• Support UrbanPromise community development and fundraising activities as needed.
• Keep learning spaces clean, safe, and organized.
• Participate in professional development and performance appraisal process.
• Establish and maintain clear and effective communication with students, parents and other teacher.
• Uphold all UrbanPromise employee policies, procedures, and values.

Essential Job Requirements:
Education:

• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
• New Jersey Certification preferred.

Experience:

• Knowledge of NJ Standards for Common core standards
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate and teach effectively.
• Experience with a diverse student population across varying ability levels.

Physical Requirements:
Teachers are expected to perform duties and responsibilities of a physical nature. A physical examination by a
medical doctor that includes proof of TB and Hepatitis test must be provided if hired.
