Plant operator trainee
CLASSIFICATION: WASTEWATER TREATMENT OPERATOR TRAINEE
SUPERVISOR: CHIEF OPERATOR
Function: Operate and maintain Wastewater Treatment Facility in a manner to
maintain compliance with the regulatory agencies and in accordance with village
policies and standards.
This is a trainee position involving responsibility for learning the duties and routines in
the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant. The work is performed
under immediate supervision of a qualified operator.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Act as a professional representative of the Village of Newark in terms of appearance
and conduct.
2. Monitor, operate and maintain the Treatment Facility and Lift Stations to facilitate
process control and assure optimum performance.
Perform on a daily, weekly, monthly or annual basis, as required:
Read meters, charts and gauges and record readings.
Perform analytical procedures; collect and record data, including pH,
temperature and suspended solids content of plant influent and effluent, BOD,
COD, sludge solids and other process control analysis.
Record data points for minimum, maximum and total daily plant flows.
Visually inspect plant pumps, tanks and process equipment.
Check overall status of treatment system and perform adjustments as
needed.
Operate belt press; regulate addition of chemicals and monitor conditioning of
sludge.
Empty and clean press.
Perform routine cleaning, lubrication and maintenance of facility equipment;
troubleshoot and repair as needed on preliminary, primary, secondary and
final treatment equipment: pumps, grit removal, screenings removal, sludge
collection, digesters, and boiler heating systems.
Assist with pretreatment inspections and perform sampling.
Operate compost facility & monitor and record conditioning of sludge,
including temperature, days in piles, etc.
Perform routine cleaning, lubrication and maintenance of lift stations;
troubleshoot and repair as needed. Monitor power consumption to assure
balanced pump operation. Supply power via mobile emergency generators
during commercial power outages.
Supervise, perform and/or assist in all confined entries; supply personal
protection equipment, perform air monitoring and generate and file confined
entry reports.
Perform seasonal and year-round facility maintenance: lawn mowing,
trimming, landscaping, snow plowing and shoveling (plant and lift stations)
and janitorial duties.
Be available to respond to alarms or other emergencies.
3. Acquire necessary contact hours to maintain the appropriate operators license.
4. Operate in adherence to regulations of all governing agencies.
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Must possess high school diploma or equivalent (GED).
2. Must either hold appropriate license (Grade 2A or 3A) or must work on obtaining 2A
certification with training costs covered by the Village.
3. Must meet the essential physical requirements to perform the duties of the position.
4. Must possess the ability to work independently as well as in a group environment.
5. Must possess the ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
6. Must be available to work weekends and nights and be able to accommodate
changes in scheduling.
7. Must possess a valid New York State drivers license and must maintain such
license throughout duration of appointment.
In addition, weekend & holiday coverage alternates between operators.
Starting wage $23.88 per hour with a rate of $31.70 after 3 years.
This is a Provisional Hire and Civil Service test will be required at next offering if hired
full time.
