Position Overview
The Appy/Deli Department Manager is responsible for overseeing all department operations and team members to meet objectives in sales, profitability, customer satisfaction, and employee engagement. This role reports directly to the General Store Manager and requires strong leadership in alignment with our company’s purpose and service priorities.
Minimum Qualifications
Candidates must meet the following requirements:
Proficient in English (reading, writing, speaking, and comprehension).
Strong basic math skills.
Ability to stand/walk throughout the entire shift.
Competence with basic computer functions.
Physical ability to bend, twist, reach, push, pull, and lift up to 25 lbs. frequently and up to 60 lbs. occasionally.
Comfort working with fresh, dried, or processed foods, including spices and powders.
Ability to work in varying temperatures.
Tolerance for dust and cleaning products used in regular sanitation.
Capability to climb ladders for overhead stock retrieval.
Excellent interpersonal skills with a focus on helpful, friendly customer service.
Strong teamwork and leadership abilities.
Flexibility to work scheduled shifts while adhering to time and attendance policies.
Core Responsibilities
1. Safety & Compliance
Follow all company policies and applicable Local, State, and Federal regulations.
Uphold HACCP and food-handling standards.
Ensure safe use of chemicals and compliance with HAZCOM requirements.
Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
Train and monitor staff on equipment usage and personal protective gear.
Report and resolve equipment or maintenance issues promptly.
Oversee receiving, storing, and rotating products, including accurate temperature and production logging.
Complete required training and maintain valid Food Safety Certification.
2. Customer Experience & Team Engagement
Provide prompt, courteous, and professional service to customers.
Support community and charitable initiatives at checkout.
Lead hiring, training, and ongoing development for department staff.
Deliver clear feedback and coaching to enhance team performance.
Foster a cooperative, enthusiastic, and customer-first culture.
Promote and sample new and seasonal items to drive interest and sales.
3. Presentation & Store Standards
Model professional appearance and behavior in line with company dress code.
Ensure price labels are accurate and current.
Oversee department cleanliness and organization, including preparation for shift transitions.
Maintain fully stocked, rotated, and properly displayed merchandise.
Ensure sale items and promotions are properly signed and merchandised.
4. Efficiency & Operations
Utilize required systems and applications for department management.
Verify invoice accuracy and product quality upon delivery.
Ensure compliance with pricing, item locator, and inventory processes.
Follow reclamation and return-to-stock procedures.
Manage department financials, shrink control, and operational adjustments to meet targets.
Maintain staffing levels that support sales and service needs.
Ensure adherence to labor laws, including regulations for minors.
Support food preparation, catering, and special orders as needed.
Perform additional duties as assigned.
