The compensation offered to the candidate selected for the position will depend on several factors, including the candidate's educational background, skills and professional experience.

Job Overview:

Supervises, coordinates and participates in the activities of staff performing various microscopic and immunohistochemical tests of gynecologic and non-gynecologic cytologic specimens to obtain data for diagnosis and treatment of disease. Performs additional tasks as requested by the Chairman of Pathology or his/her designee.

Qualifications:

Required :

• Bachelor of Science degree
• Minimum of 12 months training in an accredited school of cytotechnology
• Successful completion of all Orientation Programs

Preferred :

• Minimum of 5-7 years’ experience

Certifications and Licenses Required:

• Certification by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or an agency approved by HHS

Essential Functions:

• Supervises day to day operations of cytology
• Ensures the section of Cytology is appropriately staffed with competent personnel
• Prepares work schedules and assigns duties to staff in Cytopathology Laboratory
• Completes performance evaluations of employees using hospital guidelines, policies and procedures
• Participates in the training of post-graduate trainees and cytotechnology students; participates in required and voluntary continuing education programs to reach professional growth objectives
• Participates in interviewing, hiring and termination process
• Provides orientation to new employees in procedures and techniques utilized
• Prepares appropriate material for educational workshops, lectures and training events
• Demonstrates to staff newly approved methods to implement standard procedures
• Provides leadership and technical oversight of the Cytology section
• Establishes and supervises implementation of quality standards for cytotechnique
• Screens Cytologic material and formulates a written interpretation for each case and correlates cases with histopathologist when applicable
• Performs hierarchial review of all non-gynecological and abnormal cervico vaginal cases
• Rescreens 10 percent of all negative cases as a part of quality control and an additional measure to identify possible false negative cases,
• Prepares and maintains records of all Quality Assurance activities
• Generates monthly and yearly reports on workload of Cytopathology Laboratory
• Prepares gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens including determining acceptability of specimens, accessioning cyto preparation and staining
• Inspects instruments and equipment to ensure proper working condition; determines if results are accurate and documents in log book
• Performs clerical duties including obtaining case histories and reports, answering telephone, duplicating reports and other documents, sorting and distributing reports, maintaining files according to numerical system and preparing records for inside and outside review
• Consults with Chief of Cytology section to organize the daily work and make plans for future growth objectives
• Writes and updates procedure manuals as needed
• Contributes to the department and medical centers financial health through the monitoring of expense Assists in implementing the control and effective utilization of the physical and financial resources of the department
• Maintains appropriate levels of inventory
• Assists in capital and operating budgets
• Monitors staffing levels
• Other duties as assigned
