Co-Occurring Disorder Specialist – RWJBarnabas Health

Reporting to the Program Supervisor, you will play an essential role in providing individual, group, and family therapy, coordinating comprehensive treatment services, developing individualized treatment plans, and partnering with an interdisciplinary team to promote recovery and improve patient outcomes. A typical day for a Co-Occurring Disorder Specialist may include:
- Reporting to the Program Supervisor while providing group and individual therapy, coordinating services, arranging community resources, and reviewing and updating individualized treatment plans.
- Conducting comprehensive substance use assessments for patients experiencing co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders and making treatment recommendations to the interdisciplinary care team.
- Participating as an active member of the interdisciplinary treatment team by collaborating with physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, and other healthcare professionals to develop coordinated, patient-centered care plans.
- Developing, maintaining, and continuously updating the substance use education curriculum while partnering with the Program Supervisor to ensure educational materials remain current, relevant, and evidence-based.
- Facilitating assigned co-occurring disorder group therapy sessions, general mental health therapy groups, individual counseling, and family counseling in accordance with treatment plan recommendations.
- Coordinating referrals and arranging services with community agencies and external providers to ensure continuity of care and support each patient's recovery journey.
- Completing individualized treatment plans, progress notes, treatment summaries, and all required clinical documentation within established departmental, organizational, and regulatory timeframes.
- Maintaining accurate attendance records to support patient billing and ensuring documentation complies with all organizational policies and regulatory standards.
- Participating in multidisciplinary treatment planning meetings, county and state meetings, staff training, continuing education, performance improvement initiatives, and other professional development activities that support program excellence.
- Maintaining compliance with program policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements while completing assigned tasks and responsibilities within required deadlines.

To be considered for this Co-Occurring Disorder Specialist opportunity, you will have:
- Dual licensure as an LCADC and one of the following: LSW, LCSW, LAC, or LPC required.
- Demonstrated competence in providing both individual and group therapy.
- 3 - 5 years of clinical experience working with the Severe and Persistently Mentally Ill (SPMI) population required.
- Three to five years of clinical experience treating individuals with co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders required.
- Experience working in an Acute Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) or Partial Hospital Program preferred.
- Training or experience in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) preferred.
- Training or experience in Motivational Interviewing (MI) preferred.
- Experience with Psychodrama is a plus.
- Demonstrated knowledge of working with individuals experiencing chronic mental illness.
- Demonstrated knowledge of working with individuals experiencing substance use disorders.
- Strong clinical assessment, communication, and interdisciplinary collaboration skills.
- Ability to develop, facilitate, and lead individual, group, family, and psychoeducational therapy sessions.
- Strong presentation skills with the ability to provide educational programming to large audiences.
- Excellent organizational skills with the ability to complete documentation accurately and within established regulatory and organizational deadlines.
- A commitment to compassionate, recovery-oriented, patient-centered care and ongoing professional development.
- Scheduling requirements: Monday – Friday, 8am – 4:30pm.
