Position Overview

Prime Healthcare is seeking a dedicated Physician Assistant (PA) to join the Cardiothoracic Surgery team at Saint Michael’s Medical Center in Newark, New Jersey. The Physician Assistant will work collaboratively with cardiothoracic surgeons, intensivists, nurses, and multidisciplinary teams to provide high-quality care to patients undergoing complex cardiac and thoracic surgical procedures.

The PA will support patient care across the pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative continuum, including assisting in surgery, managing post-operative recovery, and coordinating care to ensure optimal patient outcomes.

Responsibilities

Provide comprehensive care for cardiothoracic surgery patients in pre-operative, intra-operative, and post-operative settings.

Assist cardiothoracic surgeons in the operating room as a first assist during procedures such as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG), valve repair/replacement, and thoracic procedures.

Perform pre-operative assessments, including history and physical examinations, review of diagnostic tests, and surgical risk evaluation.

Manage post-operative patients in ICU and step-down units, including ventilator management, chest tube management, and hemodynamic monitoring.

Conduct daily rounds on cardiothoracic surgery patients and develop treatment plans in collaboration with supervising surgeons.

Perform bedside procedures such as arterial line placement, removal of pacing wires, chest tube care, wound management, and central line assistance.

Interpret laboratory data, imaging studies, and cardiac monitoring results to guide treatment decisions.

Educate patients and families regarding surgical procedures, recovery expectations, medications, and post-discharge care.

Coordinate discharge planning and follow-up care with case management and outpatient providers.

Maintain accurate and timely documentation within the electronic medical record system.

Qualifications

Master’s degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program.

Current New Jersey Physician Assistant license or eligibility for licensure.

Certification by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA).

BLS and ACLS certification required.

Prior cardiothoracic surgery, cardiac ICU, or surgical critical care experience preferred.

Strong clinical judgment, procedural skills, and ability to manage high-acuity patients.

Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

A reasonable compensation estimate for this role, which includes estimated wages, benefits, and other forms of compensation, is $104,000.00 to $139,963.20 on an annualized basis. The exact starting compensation to be offered will be determined at the time of selecting an applicant for hire, in which a wide range of factors will be considered, including but not limited to, skillset, years of applicable experience, education, credentials and licensure.
