Industrial Arts/Technology Teacher

ServingSchools
Elizabeth, NJ

Job Description/Expectations

We are seeking a trained, certified professional who views the industrial arts shops as a laboratory for both academic learning and essential life skills. As a "hands-on" educator and mentor, the successful candidate will bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical application, ensuring that all students develop the knowledge, behaviors, and attitudes necessary to become successful, skilled citizens. Beyond the technical management of machinery, this individual must demonstrate the expertise to prepare and deliver high-quality instruction, evaluate student progress through diverse assessment strategies, and manage a high-energy learning environment with effective, safety-conscious leadership. We value a candidate who prioritizes the learning process over perfection and remains committed to their own continuous professional growth and supporting the maturity of their students.

  • Plan and deliver a program of study in woodworking, metalsmithing/welding, and construction trades that challenges students to think critically and solve complex problems.
  • Teach and model the creative and responsible use of power and hand tools, alongside modern drafting and CAD software.
  • Establish and strictly enforce a culture of safety. Ensure responsibility for the well-being of our students and the meticulous maintenance of our shop equipment and facilities.
  • Facilitate projects that encourage student agency, allowing them to take ownership of their designs from initial sketch to finished product. Leverage local resources and trade partnerships to bring real-world relevance and career pathways into the classroom.

Preferred: A strong background in the trades; specifically Carpentry, Metalwork, Construction, or HVAC. A degree in Technology Education or experience in a CTE (Career & Technical Education) environment is preferred.

Physical Demands

This is a high-engagement role. The successful candidate must be able to:

  • Stand, walk, bend, and maneuver through a shop environment for extended periods.
  • Lift and move materials ranging from 25?75 lbs
  • Safely operate and demonstrate the use of industrial-grade machinery.

Professional Responsibilities

  • Establishes appropriate instructional goals and related objectives consistent with the system wide curriculum and the Maine Learning Results.
  • Prepares instructional plans and materials incorporating principles of effective instruction.
  • Creates, selects, or modifies instructional plans and materials to accommodate learner differences.
  • Provides a clear description of the learning task and its content.
  • Monitors student understanding and re-teaches as necessary.
  • Communicates oral and written information effectively.
  • Fosters a classroom culture of caring and respect.
  • Maintains an evaluation program of student work and participation that regularly monitors their progress in an accurate and up-to-date manner.
  • Maintains official grade reports as prescribed by School Board policy.
  • Includes a variety of techniques for monitoring student progress in their evaluation program. This will be evidenced by a combination of some or all of the following: written tests, writing assignments, classroom performance, individual projects, oral reports, daily observations - anecdotal records, individual conferences, common assessments, diagnostic testing, standardized testing, portfolios, etc.
  • Challenges students' high level of thinking skills as part of the evaluation program.
  • Assesses whether students have met the articulated learning targets grounded in the district curriculum and Maine Learning Results with an assessment program that is consistent with the district's comprehensive local assessment system and meets the requirements of validity and reliability to the extent required by Maine law.
  • Analyzes assessment results to refine curriculum and teaching techniques.
  • Communicates student progress based on assessment results to parents and students on a regular basis.
  • Establishes and maintains appropriate learner behavior.
  • Establishes and maintains a classroom climate conducive to learning.
  • Makes effective use of available resources.
  • Improves their own professional skills and knowledge.
  • Establishes and maintains a professional leadership role in improving education.
  • Reflects on their own practice for the purpose of improving student learning.
  • Maintains a satisfactory record of their own attendance in their profession.
  • Completes assigned tasks on schedule.
  • Provides clear, detailed plans for substitutes, aides, and other professional or paraprofessional staff.
  • Arrives on time for class, meetings, and other scheduled activities.
  • Works and communicates effectively with all staff members.
  • Adheres to student IEPs.
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

PROFESSIONAL & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

  • Collaboration: Actively participate in Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) to integrate technical skills with school-wide goals like resiliency and transferable skills.
  • Real-World Pathways: Leverage local resources and trade partnerships to bring career relevance into the classroom.
  • Communication: Maintain regular communication with parents regarding student progress based on assessment results.
