Industrial Controls and Power Systems Technician

LAPP Ind - USA
Florham Park, NJ

Job Description

Job Description

Since 1959, LAPP has grown from a family idea in Stuttgart into a global name in cable and connectivity. With 5,800 colleagues across 80+ countries, we blend inventive spirit with hands-on pragmatism, giving people the room to build, solve, and thrive.

A day in this role

You start on the production floor at our Florham Park site, reviewing overnight maintenance logs. A packaging line signals a fault—you diagnose a sensor issue, swap a failed relay, verify the PLC I/O, and bring the line back up. Before lunch, you pull new 480V conduit for an equipment move, then update schematics and notes. In the afternoon, you perform scheduled PMs on drives and motors, advise engineering on improving a VFD setup, and finish by documenting your work and briefing production on equipment status.

What you'll tackle
  • Diagnose and repair electrical problems on manufacturing assets: motors, drives, PLCs, sensors, and control panels
  • Execute preventive maintenance aligned to plan to reduce unplanned downtime
  • Respond rapidly to breakdowns and perform emergency fixes to restore production
  • Replace failed components (relays, switches, motors, circuit breakers)
  • Install new machines and electrical equipment per specs and codes; support equipment moves and layout changes
  • Upgrade existing electrical systems for higher reliability, efficiency, and safety
  • Run conduit and pull wire for 120V/220V/480V circuits; work safely at heights (20–30 ft) using a scissor lift
  • Interpret electrical prints, schematics, manuals, and wiring diagrams; keep documentation current
  • Collaborate with maintenance, engineering, and production; suggest reliability improvements
  • Apply NEC and local code compliance; follow LOTO, safety policies, and OSHA guidelines
Core competencies
  • Solid electro‑mechanical fundamentals; able to read mechanical/electrical prints
  • Clear communicator with strong work ethic and positive, team‑first mindset
  • Safety champion who upholds company and OSHA procedures
  • Organized, plans work, manages time, and drives productivity and quality
  • Respectful, accountable, and aligned to organizational values
  • Hands‑on with power tools, multimeters/amp meters; basic machining (drilling/tapping)
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required; associate degree in electrical technology or related field preferred
  • 3–5 years of industrial electrical maintenance experience
  • Expertise in 480V three‑phase power, motor controls, and PLCs
  • Fluent in interpreting electrical schematics and technical drawings
  • Proficient with test gear: multimeters, megohmmeters, clamp meters, etc.
  • Strong grasp of NEC and OSHA requirements
  • Journeyman electrician license
  • PLC experience (Allen Bradley, Siemens); VFDs and servo systems
  • Familiar with industrial networks and automation systems
  • Bonus: welding or mechanical skills
Tools, systems, and voltages
  • Proficiency with 120/208/240/480 voltage systems
  • Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs)
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (Allen Bradley, Siemens)
  • Servo motors
  • 11kV to 480V transformers; 480V distribution
Additional details
  • Supervisory responsibilities: none
  • Language: English proficiency required; able to read/interpret electrical and mechanical drawings; present effectively to groups
  • Math: add, subtract, multiply, divide using whole numbers, fractions, decimals
  • Reasoning: solve practical problems with limited standardization; interpret written, oral, diagram, or schedule instructions
  • Computer: working knowledge of Lotus Notes and Microsoft Office
  • Travel: not required
  • Certifications/licenses/registrations: n/a (see Journeyman requirement above)
