Precision Toolroom Machinist
About the role
It’s 6:00 a.m. on a four-day schedule. You’re reviewing a blueprint, confirming tolerances, selecting tooling, and setting up a manual mill and lathe for a high‑precision run. You’ll verify first‑article dimensions, log SPC data, and keep production moving—safely and efficiently—throughout the day. If that sounds like your ideal day, this role is for you.
What you’ll do
- Set up and operate manual machine shop equipment (mills, lathes, etc.) to produce tight‑tolerance parts (aerospace manufacturing experience preferred).
- Interpret blueprints/technical drawings, operation/tooling/set‑up sheets, procedures, ECNs, routers, graphs, and performance metrics.
- Perform in‑process inspection using precision measuring instruments; apply SPC and problem‑solving tools to maintain quality.
- Troubleshoot issues, conduct root‑cause investigations, and drive continuous improvement using Lean Manufacturing concepts.
- Provide creative input for manufacturing, inspection, assembly, and test fixture design and build.
- Collaborate across teams; communicate clearly in writing and verbally with stakeholders at all levels.
- Close out initiatives on time through effective coordination with internal and external partners.
- Support training of team members on required technical tasks (as directed).
- Follow all safety, quality, housekeeping, and company policies/procedures; contribute to a positive, cooperative work environment.
- Keep leadership informed of area activities and significant problems; complete special projects and related duties as assigned; maintain a clean, secure work area.
What you’ll bring
- 5+ years of experience setting up and operating precision, high‑tolerance manual machine tools (aerospace preferred).
- High school diploma/GED or vocational/technical school equivalent.
- Strong math aptitude; fluent in reading blueprints and shop documentation (blueprints, ECNs, operation/tooling sheets, routers, etc.).
- Knowledge of GD&T, inspection methods, effective use of measuring equipment/instruments, SPC, performance metrics, troubleshooting, and root‑cause analysis.
- Self‑motivated, organized, able to plan, prioritize, and multi‑task; consistently aligned with company values, strategy, and vision.
- Clear written and verbal communication skills; able to work effectively with all levels of the organization.
- Ability to set up and run equipment efficiently, safely, and consistently.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
Work environment
- Frequent exposure to typical manufacturing/machine shop conditions: fluids, fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, noise, and vibration.
- Work occurs in both office and shop settings; uses standard office equipment (computers, phones, copiers, filing systems, fax) and appropriate PPE (eye, hearing, foot protection as required).
- Ambient temperature may vary due to external weather and machining processes.
- Full‑time role; overtime and weekend work may be required as business needs dictate.
- No travel expected.
Physical requirements
- Regularly required to talk and hear.
- Frequently required to reach with hands/arms and to use hands to finger, handle, or feel.
- Vision: close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
- Regularly stand for extended periods (7–8 hours daily), sit, walk, stoop, bend, turn, balance, crouch, and move about the facility.
- Lift/move up to 40 lbs regularly and occasionally up to 70 lbs.
