General Practitioner – Non‑Specific Symptoms Diagnostic Service

Opportunity to support the Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (GHNHSFT) Non‑Specific Symptoms (NSS) 2‑Week Wait cancer exclusion service.
The post holder works closely with primary, community, secondary care and the NSS team, focusing on diagnosing cancer earlier and faster where a patient’s symptoms do not fit a defined cancer pathway.
Main duties of the job
- Work alongside Patient Navigators and administrative support to triage, assess, support and signpost patient referrals to appropriate diagnostic tests, delivering a diagnosis where possible.
- Access secondary care clinicians for advice through the Advice and Guidance service.
- Attend a weekly case review meeting to inform decisions on the patient’s diagnostic pathway, management and discharge.
- Refer patients to the appropriate speciality if a cancer diagnosis is made, to a non‑cancer service if an urgent referral is required, or discharge back to their GP.
- Offer signposting to healthy lifestyle and wellbeing advice where cancer has been excluded.

Job responsibilities
With support from GHT Colleagues, lead and facilitate the smooth, effective roll‑out and safe running of the NSS. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Effective, rapid triage of NSS referrals with early ordering of appropriate diagnostics.
- A flexible approach to patient assessment, whether face‑to‑face, virtual or telephone based, tailored to individual patient needs.
- Analysis of diagnostic reports and discussion with secondary care clinicians.
- Communication of the assessment outcome to the patient and family in a supportive environment with appropriate signposting to further support services.
- Clear communication of NSS outcome to the referring GP.
- Providing support and guidance to the patient navigator.
- Working closely and effectively with the NSS team and with primary, community and secondary care colleagues (GPs, radiology, pathology, oncology, palliative care, emergency clinicians).
- Active participation within appropriate multi‑disciplinary meetings.
- Ensuring accurate, contemporaneous record‑keeping.
- Service monitoring, improvement opportunities and troubleshooting issues within the NSS team.
- Improving access and reducing inequalities of care.
- Facilitating service growth and participating in research, engagement, audit, evaluation and education activities.
- Developing links with wider NSS teams and projects supporting earlier and faster diagnosis of cancer.
- Aligning NSS with existing services to ensure a safe, unified, high‑quality service.
- Attending appropriate meetings, including regional NSS meetings, and providing feedback to partners and stakeholders.
- Participating in regular appraisal of performance and identifying training needs.
- Ensuring compliance with all relevant local and national guidelines and legislation.
- Adhering to safeguarding requirements and dealing appropriately with complaints, incidents and alerts using company systems and policies.
Qualifications and Training
- MBBS or equivalent medical degree
- Full GMC registration
- MRCGP
- Evidence of continued role development
- Teaching qualification
Experience
- Able to use own initiative and work without supervision
- Able to effectively co‑lead a team and the service
- Ability to show empathy and understand the difficulties faced by people affected by cancer
- Ability to retrieve and consolidate information from a wide range of sources and in different formats
- Ability to work in a multi‑disciplinary team
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and non‑verbally on a daily basis
- Ability to set up a new role and develop and grow the service
Knowledge and Skills
- Appropriate level of primary care experience
- Sound knowledge of clinical governance, including audit and service improvement activities
- Eligibility for Medical Indemnity Membership
- Secondary care experience ideally some oncology and/or diagnostics experience
