New Jersey American Water is seeking a full-time Maintenance Mechanic to join our team in Washington, NJ . In this role, you will be responsible for our five service stations within the local service territory. The Maintenance Mechanic will collect water quality data, check equipment, log water usage, fill day tanks, receive chemical deliveries, and more. This role will ensure our water systems operate efficiently and continue to provide safe, clean and reliable water to our customers.

 

Position Details:

 

Hourly rate of pay: $37.06/hour

This position may be eligible for annual incentive pay and contracted increases as determined by the collective bargaining agreement, and you will have the opportunity for continued salary growth.

Primary Role

The Operator-Maintenance Mechanic - Level 1 must possess a working knowledge of all facets of water operations including hydraulic, chemical and electrical equipment and processes, in addition to a thorough understanding of the distribution system network including, but not limited to, gradients, capacities, interconnections, mapping, service territory and facility locations, to ensure the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of the water treatment facility and related appurtenances.

Key Accountabilities

  • Operate remote water treatment and distribution facilities, surface water treatment plant, and related appurtenances including, but not limited to, chemical feeders, pumps purification units, and standby generation and residual processing equipment, to insure the safe, reliable production and delivery of the highest quality water.
  • Review, monitor, and adjust hydraulic and chemical processes to achieve and maintain established water quality standards and system requirements.
  • Operate and adjust computer control systems to insure the integrity of remote water treatment facilities, transmission, and distribution systems, and remote hydraulic and chemical systems.
  • Prioritize and coordinate tasks and/or activities required for the efficient, safest and reliable operation of remote water treatment facilities and related appurtenances.
  • Respond to inquiries accurately and professionally, and when necessary involve the appropriate individuals, to resolve customer and company-related issues and to achieve the highest level of customer service in all areas of assigned responsibilities.
  • Receive chemicals and materials in accord with established company, state, and/or federal safety standards and/or practices.
  • Maintain the appearance of all water treatment facilities and grounds in accord with Company Standard.
  • Prepare and maintain accurate remote facility and system records and reports.
  • Collect water samples, as directed, and in accord with established water quality procedures.
  • Perform water treatment tests and evaluate water samples, as directed, to ensure water quality is within established parameters, and, if necessary, adjust treatment processes to insure the integrity of the water supply.
  • Perform and/or assist with repairs to, and the maintenance of, equipment and facilities such as, but not limited to, chemical pump cleaning, piping repairs and modifications, cleaning and painting of equipment and structures, machinery lubrication, pump adjustments, equipment analysis and data collection, vibration, temperature, and electrical readings, and analytical water testing equipment.
  • Perform job tasks, activities, and responsibilities of the Station Operator when, in the Company’s sole and exclusive judgment, sufficient progression has been demonstrated in the core skills required for such jobs.
  • Assist in all phases of production facilities operation, as required.
  • The Operator-Maintenance Mechanic - Level 1 may be assigned to perform any responsibility that lies within the capability of the employee based on experience, knowledge, qualifications, and training.

Knowledge/Skills

  • The individual must possess a working knowledge of Company policies, procedures, and safety practices, as well as state and federal regulations applicable to area of responsibility including, but not limited to TCPA, DPCC and OSHA, and will be required to become an EHS Operator and a certified Emergency Responder Technician.
  • The Operator-Maintenance Mechanic - Level 1 must be capable of operating equipment and vehicles necessary for the completion of assignments and must possess and maintain a valid New Jersey Drivers’ License.

The Operator-Maintenance Mechanic - Level 1 will be required to pass the following qualification assessments as developed by the company:

  • Pre-employment entrance assessment.
  • Progression assessment – 90 days
  • Progression assessment - prior to the expiration of the 180 day trial period.

The Operator Maintenance Mechanic I will also be required to:

  • Within 60 days of hire enroll in a New Jersey State approved Introduction to Water/Wastewater Operations training course.
  • Within 3.5 years from date of hire, attain and maintain a T-1 and W-1 License in accord with the educational and operational criteria established by the State of New Jersey.
  • Failure to attain and maintain licenses in the time frames outlined above, and achieve the skills required will result in the individual’s loss of the Operator Maintenance Mechanic I position and return to the previous Company classification or, if none, termination of employment
  • The individual will also be required to pass an initial and annual Emergency Response and OSHA medical assessment and must be able to perform the essential functions and meet the physical requirements for Operator-Maintenance Mechanic - Level 1.

Experience/Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent certificate required

Travel Requirements

  • Local travel within service territory
  • Valid state driver's license required

Work Schedule

  • Full-time, on-site
  • Tuesday-Saturday, 7am-3:30pm
  • On-call responsibility

Additional Requirements

  • Must be able to obtain a DOT Physical
