Senior full - stack software engineer

The anticipated salary range for this role is between $160,000.00 and $205,000.00. The specific salary offered to an applicant will be based on their individual qualifications, experiences, and an analysis of the current compensation paid in their geography and the market for similar roles at the time of hire. The role may also be eligible for an annual discretionary incentive award. In addition to cash compensation, SMBC offers a competitive portfolio of benefits to its employees.
Role Description
We are seeking a highly experienced and versatile Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer with Japanese language proficiency to lead the design, development, and maintenance of enterprise-grade applications and automation systems. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in software architecture, full-stack development, and project leadership, with a proven track record of delivering scalable, user-friendly, and high-performance solutions across diverse industries including finance, e-commerce, and enterprise systems.
Role Objectives

Design and develop robust backend systems, RESTful APIs, and front-end interfaces using technologies such as Python, Java, C#, React, and SQL.

Lead end-to-end software development lifecycle: requirements gathering, architecture design, coding, testing, deployment, and documentation.

Build and optimize ETL pipelines and data warehouses for regulatory reporting and business intelligence.

Develop automation tools to streamline business operations and reduce manual workloads.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams such as Global Market vertical function, Risk management department, Product Control, and Tokyo head office to define and deliver solutions.

Conduct code reviews, mentor junior developers, and contribute to continuous improvement of development practices.

Support and troubleshoot production systems and provide technical support to users.
Qualifications and Skills
-
5+ years of professional experience in software engineering, with a focus on full-stack development.

Fluency in Japanese (reading, writing, and speaking) is required to communicate with relevant head office functions.

Proficiency in multiple programming languages: Python, Java, C#, JavaScript, HTML/CSS.

Strong experience with frameworks and tools: React, Spring Boot, Django, Flask, Docker, AWS.

Solid understanding of database systems: Oracle, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SQL Server, MongoDB.

Experience with CI/CD pipelines, Agile methodologies, and microservices architecture.

Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.

Strong communication and project management abilities.

Experience working in financial services or regulated industries is a plus.Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with automation tools like Power Automate and BI tools like Power BI.

Familiarity with legacy systems and modernization strategies.

Knowledge of regulatory reporting and banking operations.

Prior experience in mentoring and leading development teams.
Education:
Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field.
Additional coursework in Accounting, Business, or related disciplines is a plus
