About Us:
Princeton Surgical Associates is a busy, surgical practice dedicated to providing high-quality patient care. We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Medical Coder to join our billing and coding team.
Position Summary:
The Medical Coder is responsible for reviewing clinical documentation to assign appropriate ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS codes for diagnoses and procedures. This position ensures accuracy and compliance with payer guidelines, regulatory requirements, and internal policies to maximize reimbursement and minimize denials.
Key Responsibilities :
- Checking eligibility and benefits verification for treatments, hospitalization, and procedures.
- Reviewing patient bills for accuracy and completeness, and obtaining any missing information.
- Preparing, reviewing, and transmitting claims using billing software, including electronic and paper claim processing.
- Following up on unpaid claims within standard billing cycle timeframe.
- Checking each insurance payment for accuracy and compliance with contract discount.
- Calling insurance companies regarding any discrepancy in payments if necessary.
- Identifying and billing secondary or tertiary insurances.
- Reviewing accounts for insurances of patient follow-up.
- Researching and appealing denied claims
- Answering all patient and insurance telephone inquiries pertaining to assigned accounts.
- Setting up patient payment plans and work collection accounts
- Updating billing software with rate changes.
- Updating cash spreadsheets, and running collection reports.
- Collaborate with physicians, billing, and administrative staff to ensure efficient workflow and compliance.
Qualifications:
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), or equivalent certification required.
- Minimum 1–2 years of medical coding experience (specialty experience a plus, e.g., surgical, cardiology, dermatology, etc.).
- Strong understanding of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology.
- Familiarity with EMR and billing systems (e.g., Epic, Athena, NextGen, etc.).
- Excellent attention to detail, organization, and communication skills.
Work Environment
This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, scanners, and fax machines.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
This is a full-time position. Days and hours of work are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
