About the Role
We are seeking a Lead Software Engineer with deep expertise in software development and a strong specialization in observability, particularly with the Splunk platform. This role will drive the design and implementation of scalable observability solutions that enhance system reliability, performance, and user experience across enterprise applications.
You'll lead enterprise-scale initiatives, mentor engineers, and collaborate across disciplines to ensure our systems are reliable, scalable, and performant. You'll also play a key role in advancing our AI-native observability tooling, integrating platforms like Splunk and applying deep technical expertise to solve real-world challenges.
Key Responsibilities
Engineering & Architecture

Lead the design and development of observability frameworks integrated into enterprise applications.

Translate business and technical requirements into scalable, maintainable software solutions.

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to embed observability into the software development lifecycle (SDLC).

Lead the design of distributed systems with a focus on reliability, scalability, and performance.
Development & Automation
-
Build automation scripts and tools to streamline observability instrumentation and deployment.

Integrate observability into CI/CD pipelines using infrastructure-as-code (IaC) and configuration management tools.

Conduct observability code reviews and implement automated validation checks.
Governance & Continuous Improvement
-
Establish observability standards and governance frameworks across engineering teams.

Conduct regular audits and drive continuous improvement initiatives.

Stay current with industry trends, emerging technologies, and AI-driven observability innovations.
Splunk Platform Expertise
-
Architect and manage Splunk Enterprise/Cloud environments, including ITSI and ES.

Develop advanced SPL queries, dashboards, alerts, and reports for system health and performance monitoring.

Optimize data ingestion, parsing, and field extraction using configuration files and best practices.

Perform Splunk administration tasks: performance tuning, upgrades, license management, and capacity planning.

Mentor developers and engineers on effective Splunk usage and data modeling.
Operational Excellence

Participate in on-call rotations, post-incident reviews, and operational duties to ensure service quality.

Debug and resolve customer-reported issues, providing long-term solutions.

Estimate and plan work across sprints and quarters, helping the team deliver effectively.

Identify and reduce technical debt while improving operational and engineering excellence.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree and minimum 8 years of experience in Information Technology field. Additional years of relevant experience will be considered in lieu of Bachelor's degree.

6+ years of Splunk engineering or architect
-
5+ years' Experience in GCP, Azure and AWS cloud platforms log ingestions to Splunk.

Experience with Splunk Common Information Model (CIM) and Enterprise Analytic

Splunk Certified Core Power user

Splunk Certified Enterprise administrator

Solid understanding of operations, technology, communications and processes
-
Must be passionate about contributing to an organization focused on continuously improving consumer experiences.

Experience with interconnected, heterogeneous systems.

Strong understanding of industry standards and technologies

Experience working in a highly regulated environment.
Preferred Qualifications

Expert Splunk application and dashboard developer using complex data searches.

Experience optimizing applications to reduce impact on resources.

Experience with Splunk administration, configuration, tuning large environments.

Experience with data onboarding, Splunk TAs
-
Experience managing complex data, specifically managing role-based access control, configuring roles and designing data onboarding to support current and future roles.

Experience with Regex and custom scripting.

Expertise in Splunk SPL and python
-
Experience with Splunk Premium Apps - ITSI and Enterprise Security (ES) is plus.

Experience with and very comfortable working in an agile environment.

Work-At-Home Requirements
All Humana associates approved for the Home or Hybrid Home/Office work styles are required to self-provide wireless, wired cable or DSL access to the internet at the connectivity speeds required by the company to successfully perform their job with the exception of associates who live or work from home in the state of California, Illinois, Montana, or South Dakota. Connectivity requirements are detailed below.
At minimum, a download speed of 25 Mbps and an upload speed of 10 Mbps is recommended to support Humana applications, per associate.
Wireless, Wired Cable or DSL connection is suggested.
Satellite, cellular and microwave connection can be used only if they provide an optimal connection for associates. The use of these methods must be approved by leadership. (See Wireless, Wired Cable or DSL Connection in Exceptions, Section 7.0 in this policy.)
Humana will not pay for or reimburse Home or Hybrid Home/Office associates for any portion of the cost of their self-provided internet service, with the exception of associates who live or work from Home in the state of California, Illinois, Montana, or South Dakota. Associates who live and work from Home in the state of California, Illinois, Montana, or South Dakota will be provided a bi-weekly payment for their internet expense.
Humana will provide Home or Hybrid Home/Office associates with telephone equipment appropriate to meet the business requirements for their position/job.
Interview Format:
As part of our hiring process for this opportunity, we will be using an exciting interviewing technology called Modern Hire to enhance our hiring and decision-making ability. The compensation range below reflects a good faith estimate of starting base pay for full time (40 hours per week) employment at the time of posting. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.
$129,300 - $177,800 per year
This job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan. This incentive opportunity is based upon company and/or individual performance.
