Job Description
This role directs the installation of plumbing systems, equipment, and fixtures on a variety of construction projects. The plumbing mechanic plans, lays out, participates in, and supervises plumbing work both on job sites and in the shop. The position operates with a high level of independence on most assignments, while receiving general direction on larger construction and modification projects to ensure compliance with specifications and building codes.
Responsibilities
- Plan and lay out plumbing installations for construction, retrofit, addition, pharmaceutical, and new construction projects up to five stories.
- Direct and supervise plumbing work on job sites and in the shop, including coordinating and guiding helpers and junior mechanics.
- Install, modify, and repair plumbing systems, equipment, and fixtures using appropriate tools, materials, and methods.
- Run storm and sanitary lines, ensuring proper layout, marking, and installation according to plans and applicable codes.
- Work with water and temporary water lines, including layout, installation, and testing for proper operation.
- Read and interpret blueprints, rough plans, sketches, and drawings to determine job requirements and plan the sequence of work.
- Lay out work from prints and broken parts, marking locations and routing for piping, fixtures, and related systems.
- Analyze defects and malfunctions in plumbing equipment and systems to determine necessary repairs and corrective actions.
- Use hand tools and related equipment to install, adjust, and repair plumbing components, including cast iron and PVC piping.
- Receive and manage work assignments through construction management software, written job requests, and emergency calls.
- Ensure that all work complies with relevant building codes, specifications, and project requirements.
- Collaborate with leads and other trades on-site, communicating progress and issues while projects are in progress and upon completion.
- Maintain a safe, organized work area and follow established safety procedures on all job sites.
Essential Skills
- Thorough knowledge of the practices, methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the plumbing trade.
- Ability to analyze defects in plumbing equipment and systems and determine necessary repairs.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints, rough plans, sketches, drawings, and broken parts.
- Ability to lay out work accurately from prints and other technical documents.
- Proficiency in installing and working with PVC piping and related plumbing materials.
- Skill in using hand tools and standard plumbing equipment safely and effectively.
- Capability to direct and supervise plumbing work and provide guidance to helpers and junior mechanics.
- Competence in laying out, marking, and running storm and sanitary lines.
- Experience working with water and temporary water lines, including layout and installation.
- Strong understanding of plumbing codes and construction specifications relevant to commercial and industrial projects.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Cast iron piping installation and repair experience is a significant plus.
- Experience working on retrofit, addition, pharmaceutical, and new construction plumbing projects.
- Comfort using construction management software to receive and track work assignments.
- Ability to work with considerable independence while collaborating effectively with on-site leads.
- Experience running small crews or teams on construction projects.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail in layout and installation work.

Work Environment
The role is field-based on various construction sites throughout New Jersey, supporting plumbing construction projects such as retrofits, additions, pharmaceutical facilities, and new buildings up to five stories. You will work under general direction from on-site leads, often coordinating with helpers and junior mechanics. Assignments arrive through construction management software, written job requests, and emergency calls. The work involves regular use of hand tools and standard plumbing equipment, as well as handling PVC, cast iron, and other plumbing materials in an active construction environment. You can expect typical construction site conditions, including working around other trades, navigating partially completed structures, and adapting to changing site conditions while following all safety procedures.
Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bordentown, NJ.
Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $25.00 - $35.00/hr.
