Job Summary
GENERAL SUMMARY/OVERVIEW STATEMENT: The Executive Vice Chair (EVC) of the Mass General Brigham (MGB) Department of Anesthesiology is a critical member of the leadership team and serves in an executive leadership role to support an integrated Anesthesiology service line across the MGB system. The incumbent leads Anesthesiology initiatives across the system including representing the Department at the Brigham and Womens Hospital (BWH) Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) and across community/specialty hospitals outpatient surgery centers and other affiliated MGB sites. The EVC will partner closely with the Chair to meet our mission of ensuring the highest quality care for paents everywhere by advancing safe and innovative clinical care pioneering research and leading world-class education in anesthesiology. The EVC will oversee all the AMC Division Chiefs lead MGB initiatives for the Department and may have other oversight responsibilities and be assigned special projects. The EVC role calls for a highly accomplished academic anesthesiologist to provide strategic leadership across the academic missions of the MGB Department of close partnership with the Chair the EVC will help guide the coordination and alignment of academic programs and related operational efforts across two major academic medical centers while supporting broader integration across the system. The EVC will work collaboratively with departmental hospital and system leaders as well as with MGB Institute leaders on cross-disciplinary initiatives that span education research faculty development and clinical innovation. The role requires a visible and engaged presence at both academic medical centers and as appropriate at community and network sites.Qualifications
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Leadership
The EVC is expected to possess strong organizational and leadership skills to direct complex clinical research and educational efforts. Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Representing the Chair and Department on all related matters within MGB at Harvard Medical School and at local and national forums in the absence or at the request of the Chair
- Attracting retaining and motivating top talent to the Department
- Establishing an inclusive culture valuing different insights backgrounds and abilities
- Mentoring and providing leadership development for faculty
- Organizing and leading regular meetings with Division Chiefs and leading committee or other standing meetings for the Department
- Performing all ACCs/OPPEs/FPPEs and effective performance delegation and performance management for the Division Chiefs
- Leading the annual plans for clinical growth and service expansion with consideration of access and capacity issues and patient and staff satisfaction under the broad leadership of the Chair and Vice President and other key stakeholders
- Leading the integration of new technologies ensuring the department remains a leader in clinical innovation and patient care
- Collaborating with the Chair and other leaders within MGB and beyond to develop strategic partnerships and maintain regional national and international relationships
- Providing strategic input across research faculty development education clinical operations and enrichment to ensure all initiatives align with the Departments and MGBs long-term goals and vision for excellence in patient care research and education.
Clinical Operations across all Divisions
The EVC will collaborate closely with Division Chiefs the Vice Chair of Quality Community Site Chiefs Clinical Operations leaders and institutional Perioperative Services teams to optimize clinical operations across the Department. These clinical operations include but are not limited to:
- Implementing and monitoring all MGB system goals for clinical operations including those related to access capacity and length of stay
- Implementing and monitoring department clinical operations goals providing guidance and helping department teams to navigate hospital or system supports and resources
- Collaborating with perioperative services inpatient and procedural clinical services and ambulatory leadership to ensure the delivery of effective efficient and timely patient care
- Developing new business plans for clinical services and working with MGB leadership to implement mutually approved new services.
Finance Budgeting and Administration
The EVC will participate in all major budget discussions and will work closely with the Chair and department administrative leaders to determine budgetary priories development efforts expenditures for clinical coverage and faculty compensation. Working with the Chair the EVC will also have oversight of faculty professionalism and clinical performance issues (in collaboration of Vice Chair for Quality and Division Chiefs).
MINIMUM JOB QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have an MD or MD/PhD degree and be Board Certified or eligible with an outstanding record of clinical and academic achievement
- Current rank of Associate Professor or Professor
- Demonstrated experience as a strategic and collaborative physician leader in academic medicine
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Ability to manage by consensus in a team-oriented environment
- Strong work ethic and program development or business-oriented perspective
- Ability to lead with integrity and to handle confidential or sensitive information appropriately
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Maintains clinical practice at one AMC location. Attends meetings at BWH MGH community/network sites as needed and occasionally Assembly Row or the Prudential.
PROTECTED ADMINISTRATIVE TIME:
- 0.60 FTE (two administrative days plus one allotted academic day per week)
SYSTEM AND FISCAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works within legal regulatory compliance accreditation and ethical pracce standards relevant to the position and as established by MGB
- Complies with all department institutional and MGB policies and procedure
- Brings potential maers of non-compliance to the attention of the supervisor or other appropriate staff
PERFORMANCE EVALUATION:
The EVC will be evaluated by the Chair on an annual basis with direct feedback from internal and/or external constituents. Responsibilities are subject to evaluation and may change to meet the dynamic needs of the Department. Completion of annual goals as established by the Chair is required.
SALARY ADMINISTRATIVE AND CLINICAL RESPONSIBILITIES:
The EVC role comprises a 5-day workweek and will have a balance of clinical administrative and academic time for the role commensurate with executive positions. The salary for the EVC position will be determined based on years of experience and national benchmarks.
