Sales Tax Consultant

Job Title: Sales Tax Consultant
Location: Jersey City, NJ (hybrid schedule- 3 days onsite)
Hours: Part-time 24 hours/week between 9am-5pm
Type: 3-6 month contract
Compensation: $50-60/hr

Responsibilities

• Lead a short-term project focused on resolving outstanding sales tax issues across multiple U.S. states, utilizing strong Avalara expertise.
• Resolve outstanding sales tax liabilities, discrepancies, and unpaid balances through detailed calculations, reconciliations, and corrections of prior filings.
• Utilize Avalara (AvaTax & Returns) for compliance, reporting, and issue resolution.
• Communicate and negotiate with state/local tax authorities regarding payment plans and abatements.
• Partner with sales and cross-functional teams to gather necessary data and resolve tax matters efficiently.
• Ensure all filings and payments are current within the project timeline.
• Maintain comprehensive documentation and suggest process improvements.
• Provide weekly status updates to the CEO and Financial Controller.
• Complete registration processes in states where registration has not yet been established.
• Coordinate with the Washington, DC Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR), including the Voluntary Disclosure Unit, regarding registration setup and compliance issues.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree
• 3+ years relevant experience
• Proven experience in multi-state sales tax compliance, audits, and issue resolution.
• Strong hands-on experience with Avalara Sales Tax Platform (required).
• Demonstrated success resolving unpaid and complex sales tax liabilities.
• Excellent analytical skills and proficiency with numbers, calculations, and reconciliations.
• Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (data analysis and reporting).
• Strong communication, negotiation, and follow-up skills.
• Experience working cross-functionally, including with sales teams.
• Ability to work independently in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
