POSITION SUMMARY:
The Group Exercise Instructor plays a significant role in providing a positive, enthusiastic atmosphere for members’ work toward their health and fitness goals. In this visible position, the Group Exercise instructor comes into contact with members on a day in day out basis. The incumbent must be flexible and have the ability to establish positive relationships with both members and staff. Staff is successful when they increase member engagement and encourage our members to participate in our programs.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Leads group through appropriate exercise class format, (Step, Bootcamp, etc.), consistent with YMCA health and fitness principles, including, safe exercise selection, sound cueing, music speed, etc. Suggests modifications to accommodate the various fitness levels within class.
- Direct members with any special medical limitations or concerns to the Health and Wellness Director.
- Establishes a positive, upbeat attitude for class, with a clear voice and enthusiasm.
- Supervise member's behavior and exhibit patience and tact while ensuring individual actions do not infringe on the rights and privileges of others.
- Maintains neat and orderly fitness class equipment, instructing members to return equipment in an orderly fashion, and operates the stereo equipment with care.
- Is always well groomed, and presentable, wearing appropriate exercise attire.
- Is reliable starting and ending class on time, making efficient use of class time.
- Responsible for securing an appropriate substitute when unable to lead scheduled class including posting request on Group Ex Pro and effectively communicates the request to both the substitute and Health and Wellness Director.
- Maintains an appropriate stereo volume level, (when in doubt or requested by a member, please turn the volume down).
- Visually monitors class participants for their general condition, technique and ability to follow. Anticipates potential safety concerns and takes appropriate action to reduce or eliminate the risk while reacting quickly and effectively to any emergency, (this may involve initiating or responding to a "Code Blue" medical emergency).
- Participates in appropriate staff meetings and training activities. Maintains current group exercise certifications and CPR/First Aid.
- Is timely and accurate with regard to employee hand scan before and after class.
- Provide high quality customer service to all members and is able and willing to conduct YMCA tours to new or prospective members.
- Assist with the emergency evacuation of the building and other special situation tasks, as needed.
- The effectiveness of this position should be observable and measurable by membership satisfaction surveys and evaluations, both formal and casual, as well as the relative level of attendance in the class.
- Adheres to policies related to boundaries with members, volunteers, staff, and participants.
- Attends required Abuse Risk Management training and adhere to procedures related to managing high-risk activities and supervising members and participants.
- Reports suspicious or inappropriate behaviors and policy violations and follow mandated abuse reporting procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Must have successfully completed, or obtained within the first six months of teaching, Principles of YMCA Health & Fitness certification and YMCA Group Exercise Instructor certification. Other nationally recognized fitness certifications are also beneficial. Must have a working knowledge of the proper use of all Montclair YMCA group exercise fitness equipment and ability to lead members through a safe, sound and fun fitness program, consistent with YMCA training principles.
- Needs to have a positive, upbeat attitude, strong member service skills, with the ability to relate effectively with diverse population.
- Must have a CPR/AED and First Aid Certification OR get certified with 90 days of employment.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
This work requires the following physical activities: climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting, reaching, sitting, standing, walking, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, repetitive motions, talking, hearing, visual acuity, and swimming. The work is performed primarily indoors. Must be able to lift 50lbs.

HOURLY PAY RATE: $25.00 - $39.00
