Mechanical Shop Inspector Programmer

The MBU Mechanical Shop Inspectors are responsible for upholding the high-quality standards of the Thorlabs supply chain from within the Mechanics group. This Programmer will create programs on automated metrology equipment for dimensional inspection of high precision mechanical components in compliance with blueprint specifications, Thorlabs Manufacturing and ISO9001 Quality Standards. These programs shall ensure the quality, accuracy, and efficiency required on first piece, in-process, and production sample lot inspections for components produced on CNC machinery and manual equipment. They must take a customer centric approach, be independent, flexible, and a solid team player with great communication skills. Although the location of the position is in Newton, NJ, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other Thorlabs locations.
Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:
- Create programs and support documents for components manufactured by or for Thorlabs.
- Train associates on operation, maintenance, and methods for automated inspection equipment.
- Determine best method of inspection based on equipment, critical features, accuracy, and efficiency.
- Assist intercompany with product inspection needs and measurement training as required.
- Unbiased evaluation of internally produced components to blueprint specifications and manufacturing standards.
- Utilize manual and automated metrology equipment and methods to measure highly toleranced components.
- Perform and document accurate, efficient, thorough, dimensional and visual, first article, in-process, and sample lot inspections.
- Monitor product quality and communicate shop performance, providing constructive and detailed feedback to managers, machinists, and operators.
- Ensure calibrated and well-maintained equipment is utilized and kept up to date.
- Submit requests for new or additional tools and equipment or resources when necessary.
- Continuously strive to improve the quality, processes, procedures, communication, and documentation within the inspection department.
In addition to the essential functions and duties listed above, all positions are also responsible for:
- Meeting company standards pertaining to quantity and quality of work performed on an ongoing basis, performing all work-related tasks in a manner that is in compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
- Adhering to Company policies, procedures, and directives regarding standards of workplace behavior in completing job duties and assignments.

Physical Activities:
Work may be active, could stand or sit for long durations and/or perform repetitious work at times. The employee may lift or move objects up to 20 pounds. Employees must grasp, manipulate, or assemble parts and components that are often very small. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, however, may be noisy at times. Must be able to wear appropriate clothing and personal protective equipment such as but not limited to masks, glasses, gloves, and specialty garments. The required PPE and training allow for the safe handling and processing of chemicals like adhesives, lubricants and solvents, and safe operation of job-related equipment and tools.
Requirements
Experience:
- Minimum 2 years of related experience.
- Machine shop experience a plus
Education:
- High School or Trade School diploma or equivalent.
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
- Mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot problems.
- Ability to interpret mechanical blueprint specifications (metric/imperial) with a general understanding of fit, geometric tolerancing, thread classifications, and metal finishing.
- Knowledge and proficiency with various metrology tools, equipment, and inspection methods, such as a CMM, Vision Systems, Comparators, and Gauges.
- Knowledge to operate a CMM and program Vision System equipment.
- Proficient computer skills, including working knowledge of MS Office and ERP software.
- Ability to work independently within a team environment.
- Ability to prioritize workload and make educated quality decisions.
- High attention to detail with excellent organization, verbal and written communication skills.
Hourly pay rate for this position is 24.50 -31.00 depending on experience
