Posting Summary Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey is seeking a Staff Nurse -Registered Nurse Certified Diabetes Educator for the Department of Medicine - Endocrinology within Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. This position is responsible for the delivery of diabetes self-management training to patients and their families referred to the Division of Endocrinology for individual and/or group education on an outpatient basis. They must be able to function effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team providing care to patients with diabetes and their families in an outpatient diabetes program. Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Provide diabetes self-management training to individuals and families using culturally sensitive and family centered approaches in an ambulatory setting.
  • Act as a diabetes resource in the outpatient and to members of the community including primary care physicians and school nurses.
  • Able to train patients and their families/caregivers on all insulin pumps.
  • Able to utilize current software technology for optimal diabetes management.
  • Responsible for the delivery of diabetes self-management training to patients and their families with diabetes referred to the Division of Endocrinology.
  • Obtain a detailed history of their current care plan and make appropriate adjustments to their medication regimen.
  • Documents diabetes education and assessment appropriately in the patient's medical record per departmental policy.
  • Act as a liaison to assist in promoting and conducting outpatient education classes and community programs on diabetes and related topics.
  • Coordinates and assists with diabetes support groups.

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing.
  • Minimum of 1 (one) year of recent CDE experience in diabetes mellitus.
Certifications/Licenses
  • Current NJ licensure as RN.
  • Certified Diabetes Educator credentials (CDE) by the National Board of Diabetes Educators.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Experience in developing, planning, and coordinating developmentally appropriate, culturally sensitive diabetes education for pediatric patients and their families, group classes and other educational programs.
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bilingual.
  • Pediatric experience.
  • Experience with insulin pumps; training and management of patients on pumps and download and analysis of pump data.
