Therapeutic Apheresis Practice Registered Nurse

As a Therapeutic Apheresis Practice Registered Nurse , you will play a critical role in providing specialized therapeutic apheresis treatments and donor care while ensuring the highest standards of patient safety, regulatory compliance, and clinical excellence. You will collaborate with physicians, blood services professionals, and multidisciplinary care teams to perform therapeutic procedures, donor screening, blood and component collections, patient monitoring, and donor education. Your expertise will help ensure safe, efficient, and compassionate care for every patient and donor throughout their treatment and donation experience.

A typical day for a Therapeutic Apheresis Practice Registered Nurse may include:

  • Greet donors and patients in a professional, welcoming manner while coordinating appointments, verifying donation schedules, and ensuring complete and accurate registration and documentation.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality of donor and patient information while protecting privacy and adhering to organizational policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform donor and patient eligibility screenings, including confidential medical history interviews, physical assessments, and documentation in accordance with FDA, AABB, NJDOH, FACT, and organizational standards.
  • Review donor records and eligibility information to ensure complete, accurate, and compliant documentation prior to procedures.
  • Consult with physicians and the Medical Director regarding donor or patient suitability questions and clinical concerns.
  • Coordinate, schedule, and perform therapeutic apheresis procedures in collaboration with physicians and other healthcare professionals.
  • Safely manage therapeutic procedures while continuously monitoring patients for changes in clinical condition and responding appropriately to emergent situations.
  • Initiate timely nursing interventions during adverse events and accurately document patient responses and clinical outcomes.
  • Participate in scheduled weekend and holiday on-call coverage for therapeutic apheresis procedures as required.
  • Perform whole blood, automated, and non-automated blood component collections while promoting donor comfort, safety, and procedural success.
  • Accurately assign donation identification numbers, collect required laboratory specimens, and complete all required documentation and apheresis records.
  • Observe donors and patients before, during, and after procedures to recognize adverse reactions and provide appropriate nursing interventions.
  • Escalate significant donor or patient reactions to the physician immediately and ensure safe discharge only when clinical stability has been achieved.
  • Provide donor and patient education regarding procedures, laboratory testing, results, and post-procedure care in a thorough, compassionate, and understandable manner.
  • Demonstrate exceptional customer service by anticipating and responding to the needs of donors, patients, physicians, coworkers, and visitors.
  • Maintain compliance with OSHA, infection prevention, universal precautions, hazardous waste disposal, and bloodborne pathogen safety practices.
  • Support continuous quality improvement through ongoing professional development, competency maintenance, cross-training, and participation in educational opportunities.
  • Maintain current nursing licensure, required certifications, and RWJBarnabas Health practice privileges while contributing to a collaborative and high-performing clinical team.

To be considered for this Therapeutic Apheresis Practice Registered Nurse opportunity, you must:

  • Hold a current Registered Nurse license in the State of New Jersey.
  • Maintain current CPR certification.
  • Possess phlebotomy or intravenous (IV) certification.
  • Have a minimum of three (3) years of Registered Nurse experience.
  • Experience with therapeutic apheresis procedures and/or automated medical instrumentation is preferred.
  • Experience with whole blood collection and component separation techniques is preferred.
