Assistant Controller

Our client is one of New Jersey's leading construction and telecommunications services providers, with expertise spanning data center infrastructure, healthcare, financial infrastructure, structured cabling, and electrical system design-build, installation, and maintenance. They are a high-performance subsidiary of a publicly traded group.

They are looking for an Assistant Controller who is ready to own the role from day one — not maintain it. The current function is senior and tenured; what they need now is fresh process thinking, genuine ambition, and someone who will build within the position rather than simply fill it.

The Assistant Controller will support the Controller and CFO across the full accounting cycle, with a hard focus on a 5-day monthly close (6-day quarterly), and take a leading role in building out internal and management reporting. Beyond the close, you will drive ERP optimization on Vista ViewPoint, support business continuity planning for the finance function, and play a key role in the annual external audit cycle with EY. This is a group-reporting environment with real GAAP discipline and SOX awareness expected.

What you'll own

• Monthly close to a 5-day target; 6-day quarterly close
• Build-out of internal and management reporting — cleaner workpapers, better system visibility
• Account reconciliations, journal entry review, and escalation of exceptions
• ERP optimization on Vista ViewPoint
• Business continuity planning for the finance function
• Annual external audit support (EY) and internal audit documentation requests
• Banking activity including preparation and release of approved payment files

What we're looking for

• BA/BS in Accounting or Finance; CPA or CPA-eligible preferred
• Public accounting background strongly preferred - big 4 or top-10 firm is a nice to have
• 5+ years progressive development in complex corporate and technical accounting functions, or equivalent depth in a controlled accounting environment
• Public company or highly controlled-environment experience: GAAP compliance, SOX awareness, group reporting to a parent
• Job costing and WIP reporting experience are nice to have, but not required
• Advanced Excel skills: VLOOKUPs, XLOOKUPs, Index/Match, pivot tables, financial models
• Vista ViewPoint ERP experience preferred
• An ambitious self-starter who will identify gaps, propose solutions, and own outcomes
