This role focuses on the precision manufacturing of complex components using CNC milling equipment in a highly controlled environment. You will independently take jobs from drawing and program review through machine set-up, first-piece verification, and stable production. The position requires advanced CNC milling set-up, programming, tooling, inspection, troubleshooting, and process-support skills, particularly for applications involving tight tolerances and demanding quality requirements in aerospace or similar industries.
Responsibilities- Set up CNC mills for production, including loading programs, selecting and installing appropriate tooling, and configuring fixtures and workholding devices.
- Review engineering drawings, blueprints, and manufacturing documentation to fully understand job requirements, specifications, and tolerances before beginning set-up.
- Program CNC machines and perform on-machine program editing as needed to optimize processes and ensure parts meet dimensional and quality requirements.
- Independently move jobs from initial drawing and program review through complete machine set-up, first-piece verification, and stable, repeatable production.
- Perform first-piece inspections using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, gauges, and, where applicable, coordinate measuring machines (CMM).
- Verify that all produced parts meet tight tolerances and quality standards associated with aerospace or similar precision industries.
- Adjust tooling, offsets, feeds, and speeds to improve process stability, surface finish, and dimensional accuracy.
- Troubleshoot machining and process issues, identify root causes, and implement effective corrective actions to maintain consistent production quality.
- Support continuous improvement of machining processes by recommending changes to tooling, fixturing, programming, and methods.
- Work within a formal quality-controlled environment, following established procedures and documentation aligned with AS9100 or comparable quality systems.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area while operating multiple jobs or machines as required.
- Collaborate with engineers, programmers, and other shop personnel to ensure efficient workflow and timely completion of production schedules.
- Minimum 5 years of hands-on CNC milling, set-up, tooling, or precision machining industry experience.
- Proven experience programming CNC machines, including loading, editing, and optimizing programs at the machine control.
- Ability to perform advanced set-up and operation of CNC lathes, including 2-axis turning and Y-axis/live-tooling or mill-turn equipment.
- Strong experience with CNC mill operation, including Haas and Fanuc-controlled equipment.
- Ability to change tooling, set tool lengths, and manage tool offsets to ensure accurate machining.
- Experience producing precision components for the aerospace industry or similar industries requiring tight tolerances and controlled processes.
- Strong shop math skills, including the ability to perform calculations related to dimensions, tolerances, and machining parameters.
- Ability to read and understand engineering drawings, blueprints, and manufacturing documentation.
- Experience working in a quality-controlled manufacturing environment, with familiarity with AS9100 or comparable formal quality systems strongly preferred.
- Proficiency using precision measuring tools such as calipers, micrometers, and gauges for in-process and final inspection.
- Experience using a coordinate measuring machine (CMM) for dimensional verification.
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Must be a US citizen or a US resident due to ITAR regulations.
- Vocational or technical-school training in machining, manufacturing, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience working in a machine shop environment running multiple jobs or machines daily.
- Familiarity with aerospace manufacturing standards and documentation practices.
- Mechanical aptitude and a strong understanding of machining principles and metal cutting.
- Experience with continuous improvement initiatives and process optimization in a production environment.
The organization emphasizes continual improvement and invests heavily in employee development through ongoing training programs, including both in-house and customized off-site learning opportunities.
