As the Human Resource (HR) Generalist, you’ll be the primary driver of our HR initiatives, working closely with administrative leadership to manage a broad range of responsibilities — including recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, compensation and benefits and workforce information systems. This hands-on role calls for a detail-oriented, grounded professional who can multitask effectively while maintaining strict confidentiality and ensuring regulatory compliance in a fast-paced environment.

Role Summary
The Human Resource (HR) Generalist is responsible for overseeing a comprehensive range of workforce management functions including recruitment, hiring, onboarding, employee relations, benefits administration, performance management support, training coordination and information system data collection. Working closely with key administrative personnel, the HR Generalist helps uphold company policies and regulatory requirements—ensuring fair labor practices and equal opportunity principles are embedded in all workforce initiatives. This role is essential in shaping workforce practices and expectations that foster a positive, productive and compliant workplace environment supporting both employees and management.
Key Responsibilities
Recruitment & Onboarding
- Develop, write and post clear, engaging job descriptions to attract qualified candidates.
- Review resumes and applications to identify top talent aligned with departmental needs.
- Conduct resume pool pre-screenings to assess candidates’ skills, experience and role fit potential.
- Manage the full hiring process, including extending offers, initiating background checks, processing employee badging, assisting benefit enrollment and setting up system access
- Design and deliver comprehensive onboarding programs that introduce new employees to company culture, policies and compliance requirements.
- Lead new hire orientation sessions to ensure smooth and positive integration.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date employee records, including personnel files and hiring documentation.
- Review and analyze compensation data during the recruitment process to help determine appropriate salary ranges for open roles, supporting fair, competitive and budget-conscious job postings.
Workforce Data & HRIS Management
- Manage and maintain HR information system (HRIS) and talent management systems, ensuring data accuracy, timely entry of personnel actions and generation of reports to support workforce planning, compliance and leadership decision-making.
- Ensure confidentiality and secure handling of employee information in accordance with privacy regulations and company policies.
- Process new hire, personnel action and separation forms, ensuring all follow-up actions and system updates are completed accurately and in a timely manner.
- Monitor system workflows and audit trails to identify discrepancies, streamline data processes and support accurate reporting across departments.
- Assist in the implementation, testing and training of new HRIS features or system upgrades, ensuring smooth transitions and user adoption.
- Maintain and analyze workforce demographics, hiring activity and turnover trends to support adequate staffing patterns, succession planning, diversity initiatives and compliance metrics.
Employee Relations
- Respond promptly and professionally to employee concerns, facilitating conflict resolution and mediation as needed.
- Implement, communicate and enforce HR policies to ensure consistency and fairness across the organization.
- Support performance management processes, including coordinating reviews, delivering feedback content and assisting with performance improvement plans.
- Collaborate with leadership on strategies that enhance employee engagement, morale and retention.
- Conduct employee surveys, stay interviews and exit interviews to gather feedback and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Coordinate and support employee leave requests, workers’ compensation claims, ADA accommodations, short- and long-term disability and unemployment claims, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and timely, compassionate communication.
- Develop and promote employee wellness campaigns, resources and activities to support overall health, wellbeing and work-life balance.
Compensation & Benefits
- Assist with payroll-related tasks, including reviewing timecards, monitoring time tracking reports and processing personnel action forms related to compensation changes and terminations.
- Contribute to the analysis and review of employee insurance coverage options, maintaining thorough knowledge of all benefit elections offered.
- Assist employees in understanding and accessing health benefit coverage options by guiding them through enrollment processes and addressing related questions.
- Support the administration of employee benefits programs and manage leave requests in compliance with applicable laws.
- Play an active role in annual Open Enrollment and benefits renewal coordination.
- Support analysis of plan utilization, employee feedback and market trends to guide benefit strategy, renewal decisions and identify opportunities to enhance total rewards within budget.
- Assist with salary benchmarking, compensation data review and preparation of recommendations for new hires, promotions and adjustments.
- Support consistent, equitable compensation practices that align with organizational goals and regulatory requirements.
Compliance & Legal
- Ensure all HR practices adhere to fair labor standards, NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development regulations, Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) laws and other relevant federal, state and local employment regulations.
- Maintain and update HR policies and procedures to reflect legal requirements and best practices.
- Stay current on workforce regulations and industry trends, proactively adjusting policies and processes to maintain compliance.
Other Responsibilities
- Identify training and development needs, assign e-learning modules and support ongoing employee skill building and certification requirements.
- Collaborate with key administrative personnel to implement HR initiatives and support organizational goals.
- Contribute to the development, implementation and maintenance of HR-related SOPs, protocols, handbook references and standard forms to ensure consistency, compliance and accessibility across departments.
- Maintain working knowledge of Labor Peace Agreements, workforce and labor relations and union dynamics.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in human resources, business administration, or a related field is preferred; HR Certification(s) highly regarded
- Minimum of 3 years of progressive experience in Human Resources, preferably in regulated industries.
- Solid understanding of NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development laws, fair employment practices and EEO compliance; familiarity with CRC regulations preferred.
- Experience collaborating with leadership and benefits brokers to evaluate and select employee health insurance plans that balance cost-effectiveness with comprehensive coverage.
- Proven ability to multitask and remain composed under pressure.
- Exceptional conflict resolution, communication and interpersonal skills.
- Elevated level of integrity, professionalism and commitment to confidentiality.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, HRIS and talent management software.

- Proactively lead the evaluation and negotiation process of health insurance plans with leadership and brokers, gathering key information and driving cost-effective, comprehensive coverage options for organizational review and decision.
- Ability to travel as needed.
- Must be at least 21 years old to comply with state regulations.
- Willingness to undergo background checks, fingerprinting and able to obtain ID badging clearance per New Jersey Cannabis Regulatory Commission (NJ CRC) terms.
