CDL Driver Trainer

Overview

The CDL Driver Trainer is responsible for training, evaluating, and developing company drivers to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant vehicle operation. This role focuses on improving driver performance, reducing safety incidents, and maintaining compliance with all transportation regulations and company policies.

Essential Functions

  • Conduct classroom and behind-the-wheel training sessions for new and existing drivers.
  • Evaluate drivers’ skills, knowledge, and compliance with company and regulatory standards.
  • Provide coaching and feedback to improve driving techniques, safety awareness, and fuel efficiency.
  • Deliver training on topics such as defensive driving, vehicle inspection, accident prevention, DOT regulations and Smith System Keys.
  • Conduct ride-alongs, assessments, and periodic driver performance reviews.
  • Maintain accurate records of training activities, driver progress, and certification status.
  • Support incident investigations by reviewing driver performance and providing retraining as needed.
  • Assist in the development and updating of training materials and safety programs.
  • Ensure all training activities comply with local, state, and federal transportation laws.
  • Promote a positive safety culture and serve as a role model for professional driving behavior.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (Associate or Bachelor’s degree preferred).
  • Valid commercial driver’s license (CDL) with appropriate endorsements.
  • Minimum [3–5] years of professional driving experience with a clean driving record.
  • Prior experience in training, coaching, or supervisory roles preferred.
  • In-depth knowledge of DOT regulations, FMCSA standards, and company safety policies.
  • Strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to assess and document driver performance objectively.
  • Proficient with computer systems for training records and reporting.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to sit, stand, and drive for extended periods.
  • Capable of performing vehicle inspections and demonstrating driving maneuvers.
  • Must meet medical and physical requirements for commercial driving.

Work Environment

  • Combination of classroom, office, and on-road environments.
  • May require travel between terminals or training sites.
  • Variable hours, including occasional evenings or weekends for training sessions.
