The Professional Math Tutor supports student learning and success across all levels of mathematics at Georgian Court University. This position provides direct tutoring, supplemental instruction, and academic coaching designed to help students build confidence, strengthen foundational and advanced math skills, and succeed in courses from developmental through upper-division levels.

Working as part of the Office of Student Success, the Professional Math Tutor collaborates with faculty, advisors, and student support staff to create equitable pathways for academic achievement and persistence. The tutor’s work is grounded in the university’s core values of respect, compassion, integrity, justice, and service and reflects a commitment to inclusive excellence.

Essential Functions:

• Provide one-on-one and group tutoring for students in mathematics courses across the curriculum, from foundational math through advanced topics.
• Offer supplemental instruction sessions or study groups in partnership with faculty teaching key math courses.
• Support students in developing effective study strategies, time management, and problem-solving approaches that enhance academic confidence and performance.
• Utilize and teach the use of graphing calculators, mathematical software, and digital tools to support conceptual understanding.
• Collaborate with faculty and the Office of Student Success to identify courses or populations where targeted math support can improve student outcomes.
• Assist students in interpreting assignments, reviewing problem sets, and preparing for exams, ensuring support aligns with course expectations.
• Maintain accurate documentation of tutoring sessions and student progress to inform program assessment and continuous improvement efforts.
• Support an inclusive, welcoming environment for all learners, particularly first-generation students, commuters, and those managing academic challenges.
• Participate in ongoing professional development and training in tutoring best practices, culturally responsive teaching, and student engagement.
• Perform other duties as assigned in support of the Office of Student Success mission.

Qualifications:

• Master’s degree or higher in Mathematics (M.A. or Ph.D.); background in Abstract Algebra and Real Analysis strongly preferred.
• Comprehensive knowledge of mathematics concepts at multiple levels, including developmental, applied, and theoretical courses.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex mathematical ideas clearly and effectively to diverse learners.
• Experience working with college students individually and in groups, with sensitivity to varied learning styles and backgrounds.
• Proficiency with graphing calculators, Microsoft Office Suite, and learning management systems.
• Commitment to student success, equity, and the mission of Georgian Court University.

Preferred:

• Experience providing tutoring or academic support within a college or university setting.
• Familiarity with student success initiatives, early alert systems, or data-informed academic interventions.
• Ability to work occasional evening or weekend hours to meet student needs.
