Join our research group, Autonomous Control and Operations, located in Princeton, NJ, for a 3-6 month internship, and contribute to the development and implementation of cutting-edge operations software solutions for industrial applications. Our close contact with different business units in Siemens provides the opportunity to contribute to and gain experience in real industrial challenges. During this internship, you will experience the excitement and challenges of industrial research. Key responsibilities:

  • Contribute to industrial research projects focused on data integration and modeling for shop floor applications.
  • Explore and implement strategies for integrating machines and devices on a production line into IT/OT systems (e.g., SCADA, MES, ERP) using Siemens Industrial Edge.
  • Develop and test data collection and aggregation methods from various shop floor systems, including OEM hardware, robots, inspection systems, shop floor AI, and HMI systems.
  • Learn to interface with Operations Software, such as Siemens Opcenter X, using custom applications, public APIs, or existing product functionalities.
  • Analyze and understand the interactions between different levels of the automation pyramid to design effective data integration strategies.
  • Collaborate and exchange ideas with experts in industrial automation, operations software, and IT systems across Siemens research and business units.

Basic Qualifications:

  • MS or PhD student pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mechatronics, or a closely related field.
  • Programming proficiency in Python or similar languages — including experience writing clean, modular, reusable code.
  • Foundational understanding of operations software concepts and their role in manufacturing environments.
  • Familiarity with data integration strategies and the importance of bringing the right data to the right system or person at the right time.
  • Hands-on experience with data collection and aggregation from various industrial sources.
  • Proficiency in English, both written and verbal.
  • Legally residing in the United States of America and hold a valid work permit for the US.

Preferred Qualification:

  • Practical experience with Industrial Edge platforms or similar edge computing solutions for industrial applications.
  • Familiarity with the automation pyramid and how its various levels (e.g., control, SCADA, MES, ERP) interact.
  • Understanding of IT systems, including concepts related to Docker, Kubernetes, virtual machines, or Proxmox.
  • Experience with Siemens Digital Industries Software portfolio components.
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (e.g., OPC UA, Modbus TCP).
  • Experience with software development best practices: version control (Git), unit testing (pytest), and technical documentation.
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work in a growing, dynamic, interdisciplinary team of experts across industrial engineering, software development, and data science.
