Position Summary:

A Yard Checker plays a critical role in maintaining the accuracy, organization, and safe flow of trailer movements within the warehouse yard. This position ensures that all inbound, outbound, and staged trailers are properly logged, located, and communicated to both warehouse operations and yard jockeys.

Key Responsibilities

Trailer & Yard Management

• Perform continuous yard checks to document trailer numbers, locations, seal numbers, and trailer status (loaded/empty).
• Maintain an up-to-date and accurate yard map or digital yard management system (YMS).
• Identify and report dropped trailers, unassigned trailers, or trailers in incorrect spots.

Inbound / Outbound Support

• Verify all incoming and outgoing loads, including:
  • Trailer numbers
  • Seal integrity and seal numbers
  • Appointment times & bills of lading (if applicable)
• Coordinate with gate guards, security, or transportation providers to ensure accurate logging of arrivals and departures.

Communication & Coordination

• Communicate trailer movement needs to yard jockeys/hostlers (move to dock doors, move to staging, drop zones, etc.).
• Work closely with warehouse leads/supervisors to prioritize dock door assignments.
• Provide updates to transportation coordinators regarding detention, empty trailer availability, and carrier equipment status.

Safety & Compliance

• Perform all activities following GEODIS safety rules, PPE requirements, and yard traffic procedures.
• Identify and report unsafe equipment, damaged trailers, or hazardous conditions in the yard.
• Follow all DOT, OSHA, and facility-specific guidelines during yard inspections.

Documentation & Systems

• Use handheld devices, tablets, or paper logs to update:
  • Trailer counts
  • Dock door assignments
  • Yard audit results
  • Detention tracking
• Support accuracy for inventory tied to trailer storage or live loads.

Skills & Qualifications

• Strong attention to detail and accuracy while working outdoors.
• Ability to walk large yards and work in all weather conditions.
• Solid communication skills with drivers, yard jockeys, and warehouse teams.
• Familiarity with Yard Management Systems (YMS), RF scanners, or warehouse systems (preferred).
• Knowledge of transportation equipment (53’ trailers, liftgates, reefer units, etc.) is helpful.

Physical Requirements

• Walking the yard frequently (up to several miles per shift).
• Ability to climb trailer steps to check seals when required.
• Tolerance for outdoor conditions: heat, cold, rain, snow, etc.
