Cheese Monger | Gourmet Department Lead
Gary’s Wine & Marketplace is seeking a passionate, hands-on Cheese Monger | Gourmet Department Lead to oversee and elevate our artisanal cheese and gourmet foods program. This role is ideal for a knowledgeable cheese professional who loves working at the counter, leading by example, and taking ownership of product selection, ordering, and presentation.
As the Lead, you will be the driving force behind the cheese department—curating assortments, managing inventory, mentoring team members, and delivering an exceptional customer experience rooted in education and enthusiasm.

Key ResponsibilitiesDepartment Leadership & Ownership
- Serve as the day-to-day leader of the cheese and gourmet foods department
- Lead by example with a hands-on approach on the sales floor and behind the counter
- Train, mentor, and support team members in cheese knowledge, customer service, and best practices
- Partner with store leadership on department goals, merchandising standards, and sales growth
Product Selection & Ordering
- Manage department inventory, including ordering, reordering, and maintaining par levels.
- Monitor sales trends, seasonal demand, and shrink to optimize assortment and freshness
- Work with vendors and internal teams to source high-quality cheeses and gourmet products
Customer Experience
- Deliver warm, knowledgeable, and engaging customer service
- Guide customers through cheese selections, tastings, and pairings (wine, charcuterie, accompaniments)
- Act as a cheese ambassador, educating customers and building long-term loyalty
Merchandising & Operations
- Cut, wrap, label, and merchandise cheeses following quality and food safety standards
- Maintain visually compelling displays and ensure proper rotation and freshness
- Support gift baskets, cheese boards, and custom gourmet offerings
- Ensure cleanliness, organization, and sanitation of all prep and service areas
Requirements
- Strong passion for cheese and gourmet foods with a desire to lead and grow a department
- Prior experience as a cheese monger or in specialty food retail required
- Previous leadership or department ownership experience preferred
- Proven ability to manage inventory and place accurate, timely orders
- Excellent customer service, communication, and teaching skills
- Hands-on, proactive leadership style with attention to detail
- Comfortable working in a fast-paced retail environment
- Basic computer skills for ordering, inventory, and internal communication
- Ability to lift up to 40 lbs. and stand for extended periods
- Flexible availability, including evenings and weekends
- Must be at least 18 years old
