About the Role

In order to achieve its ambition of serving 80,000-100,000 Fellows over the next decade, Braven is hiring an Associate Software Engineer to help build the platform, tools, and automation that power Braven’s programs and keep students empowered, connected, and engaged. On the Systems team, we prioritize impact, ship the simplest thing that works, and iterate as we learn, keeping real impact on students’ lives ahead of elegant code. As an Associate Software Engineer, you will take well-scoped features from spec to production, write well-tested code, and help integrate the systems our programs rely on, growing your craft through code review and mentorship from senior engineers.

This role is on the Systems team and reports directly to the Sr Dir, Software Engineering.

What You’ll Do

Build and ship features (70%)

  • Implement well-scoped features, fixes, and automations in Python and/or Ruby on Rails, guiding them from clear specs to production.
  • Write and maintain tests for the code you ship, and debug issues in existing features, keeping the student end-user in mind.

Collaborate and learn (20%)

  • Participate in Scrum, sprints, and code reviews, and apply feedback from senior engineers.
  • Document your work and keep code, data, and records clear, maintainable, and secure.

Grow your craft (10%)

  • Build foundational software engineering practices and stay informed on industry trends, security, and data privacy.
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in a technical field, completion of a technical training program, or equivalent practical experience
  • At least 1 year of software engineering experience (academic, internship, bootcamp, or professional)

  • Strong communication skills and a positive, adaptable, solutions-focused mindset in the face of shifting priorities.
  • Exposure to, or curiosity about, applying AI and automation in your work.
  • Demonstrated commitment to building strong and welcoming cultures that help to develop others.
  • Exemplification of Braven’s core values.
  • Experience that has informed your belief in Braven’s mission and has prepared you to work with or for Braven’s student Fellow population.

Please know that no one ever meets 100% of the preferred qualifications. If much of this describes you, we encourage you to apply.
