Maintenance Technician
Job Description
Job Description
Order of Friars Minor – Franciscan U.S. Organization
Maintenance Technician – Full Time
St. Anthony Church, Butler, New Jersey
Organizational background and Mission We Franciscans owe our inspiration to Francesco di Bernardone, an affluent young merchant from the Italian town of Assisi, who in 1206 renounced his wealth and social status in favor of a life dedicated to God and the poor. His life and ministry inspired other men to join him and become the first Franciscan friars. Today, Francesco is known as St. Francis of Assisi, and the Order of Friars Minor comprises more than 100 provinces located around the world.
The Gospel life of the Friars has four central components: first, to be men of prayer; second, to live as lesser ones, “not making anything our own;” third, to create a brotherhood of mutual care among ourselves; and fourth, to “go about the world” entering people’s everyday lives as heralds of God’s reign and agents of Gospel peace.
A bit about the role:
Reporting to the Guardian of St. Anthony Friary, you will ensure the smooth and efficient operation of the church, school and cemetary. In this key role, you will conduct routine inspections, troubleshoot building systems, complete general repairs, and maintain safe, clean, and welcoming environments. You will also collaborate with the Maintenance Technician of the Church and School to share resources and assist with larger tasks when needed.
Full-time employees supporting Province of Our Lady of Guadalupe enjoy a generous benefits package including affordable healthcare, paid time off, life & disability insurance and a generous 401(k) annual contribution.
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform routine inspections and preventive maintenance on friary and convent facilities, including mechanical, plumbing, electrical, heating, and cooling systems.
- Ensure cleanliness and upkeep of bathrooms, kitchens, common areas, and waste disposal areas; oversee dumpsters to maintain sanitation.
- Troubleshoot and repair building systems, performing minor carpentry, painting, and drywall work, while recognizing when specialized contractors (plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians) are required.
- Maintain landscaping and exterior safety, coordinating with outside services for groundskeeping, snow removal, and other seasonal needs.
- Monitor safety and compliance, ensuring that building systems meet safety standards and environmental regulations; maintain accurate logs of all maintenance activities and inventory.
- Respond promptly to emergencies, including equipment failures, leaks, or power issues to reduce disruption to friary and convent operations.
- Manage supplies and equipment, ordering and tracking materials needed for timely completion of tasks.
- Work collaboratively with campus staff, providing assistance to the Maintenance Technician of the Church and School and requesting support when tasks require more than one person.
About you:
- High school diploma or GED required; technical training or certification is a plus.
- Knowledge of mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and heating/cooling systems with experience using diagnostic and power tools.
- 1–2 years of experience in general building maintenance or a related field preferred.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to make sound decisions and work independently.
- Valid driver’s license and ability to lift/transport up to 30 pounds.
- Demonstrates reliability, good communication skills, and a cooperative work style that reflects Franciscan values.
Celebrating difference, together stronger
Franciscan values suggest we don’t just accept difference — we celebrate it, we support it, and we thrive on it as we demonstrate our spirituality for the benefit of people, particularly the underserved and marginalized. We are committed to providing an environment of mutual respect and make the world a better place.
