Head Preschool Teacher - Edison, NJ
Pay Range: $60,000-$65,000 annually
Schedule: Full-time, 8-hours per day. M-F from 7 am to 6:30 pm, Saturdays 8 am-12pm

The Head Preschool teacher is responsible for managing the center’s classrooms and its staff to create a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for kids aged 2.5 - 13 years of age. This role includes mentoring and supervising Group Preschool teachers, Assistant Preschool teachers, Program coordinators and Aides. In addition to classroom responsibilities, the Head Preschool teacher will assume Center Director Designee responsibilities. Job Duties & Responsibilities:
- Curriculum planning: Plan and implement a curriculum that aligns with early childhood education standards meeting the individual needs and developmental levels of the children.
- Curriculum must align with both Montessori methodology while also including popular non-Montessori educational standards, such as the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) or state-approved curriculum standards. Activities must focus on traditional Montessori methodologies, and include creative methods like storytelling, arts and crafts, and dramatic play.
- Classroom management: Oversee the day-to-day operations of the classroom, ensuring a nurturing, organized, and stimulating atmosphere.
- Staff development & supervision: Provide guidance and mentorship to Group Preschool teachers, Assistant Preschool teachers, Program coordinators and Aides. This includes delegating tasks, modeling effective teaching techniques, and helping set team goals.
- Child development & assessment: Observe and evaluate each child's progress across developmental domains and document their growth in portfolios and other reports.
- Parent communication & relationship management: Build and maintain strong, positive relationships with parents through regular communication. This can include newsletters, conferences, and other standard forums to discuss a child's progress and strategies for support.
- Health and safety: Ensure the classroom and playground are clean, safe, and compliant with all licensing regulations and food service guidelines.
- Record keeping: Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including lesson plans, attendance, and all other administrative paperwork.
- Professional development: Plan professional development activities to ensure staff are continually developing their early childhood educator/caregiver skills. Professional development activities include but not limited to NJCCIS professional development courses, in-service training, staff meetings, and other professional development activities to stay current with best practices in early childhood education.
- Backup Role: Serve as Center Director Designee and assume Center Director responsibilities for when director is not onsite. Serve as a backup for Group Preschool teachers and be ready to perform essential childcare tasks to ensure seamless operations during any unforeseen staff shortages.
- Experience: 4-6 years of prior experience working as a Head Preschool teacher.
- Background check: All candidates must successfully complete a criminal background check.
- Health check: All candidates must successfully complete a Mantoux test for Tuberculosis and otherwise be in good health to meet licensing requirements to work with young children.
- First Aid/CPR/AED certification by organizations such as American Red Cross, American Heart Association, or other authorized independent training centers or safety companies.
- Preferred: Child Development Associate (CDA) credential
- Soft Skills: Requires good written and spoken communication, patience to work with children, creativity, problem solving, organizational & time management skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with other staff and partners.
- Physical demands: The role will be physically demanding, requiring a teacher to stand for long periods, lift at least 35–50 pounds, and get up and down from the floor to interact with children.
- Bachelor's or Master’s Degree in Early Childhood Education, Child Development, or a related field.
- Montessori teacher training by leading training centers
- Professional training, such as college coursework in Early Childhood Education or a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential.
- Patience and nurturing disposition: A love for working with young children and the ability to remain calm in a busy classroom is essential.
- Communication skills: Strong verbal and written skills are needed to interact with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Adaptability and flexibility: The ability to improvise and adapt to the children's needs is important.
- Teamwork: A collaborative and positive attitude for working with other educators.
- Organizational skills: Strong time management and attention to detail for managing tasks and record-keeping.
