About the Opportunity
A well-established Mid-Atlantic defense litigation firm with 40+ years of history seeks a Litigation Associate to join its Fairfax office. The firm represents insurers, insureds, self-insured companies, third-party administrators, and commercial clients in a wide range of civil litigation matters, including general liability, insurance defense, workers compensation, transportation, premises liability, products liability, construction-related claims, and coverage matters.
This role offers hands-on responsibility, courtroom and deposition experience, direct client contact, and the ability to develop professionally within a collaborative, trial-ready team known for cost-effective resolution and strategic advocacy.
Key Responsibilities
- Handle a litigation caseload from initial pleadings through resolution, including discovery, depositions, motion practice, and negotiation.
- Draft and argue dispositive and procedural motions, legal memoranda, mediation statements, and settlement documents.
- Conduct and defend depositions of parties, fact witnesses, and experts.
- Engage in court appearances, mediations, and arbitration hearings.
- Evaluate claims, perform legal research, and advise clients on litigation strategy and risk assessment.
- Communicate regularly with clients, carriers, and co-counsel to ensure effective case handling.
- Collaborate with partners and senior attorneys on complex civil, insurance defense, and workers compensation matters.
- Maintain high-quality, timely, and cost-efficient file management consistent with client and carrier expectations.
Qualifications
- JD from an accredited law school.
- Active DC or Virginia bar license, or eligibility or willingness to seek admission shortly.
- 3-5 years of civil litigation or insurance defense experience, ideally including:
- General liability, premises liability, transportation, workers compensation, or insurance coverage work.
- Motion practice with experience drafting and arguing dispositive motions.
- Depositions, mediations, client counseling, and negotiations.
- Demonstrated ability to manage cases independently with partner support as needed.
- Strong writing, analytical, and courtroom skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly with clients, carriers, and colleagues in a fast-paced defense practice.
