Quality Inspector

Alstom
Newark, NJ

About Alstom

At Alstom, we understand transport networks and what moves people. From high‑speed trains, metros, monorails, and trams, to turnkey systems, services, infrastructure, signalling and digital mobility — we offer our customers the broadest portfolio in the industry. Every day, more than 80,000 colleagues lead the way toward greener, smarter mobility worldwide, connecting cities as we reduce carbon and replace cars.

Role Purpose

The Quality Inspector ensures that industrial quality standards (QC/QA) are met throughout production and field operations. You will monitor processes, identify defects, manage nonconformities, support audits, and work closely with teams to drive continuous improvement, safety, and compliance.

Key Responsibilities

Shop Floor & Inspection Activities

  • Execute industrial quality inspections (QC/QA) directly on the shop floor in accordance with Alstom’s Quality Management System standards.

  • Track and report Defects Per Unit (DPU) to drive line quality animation at shift end.

  • Lead Handovers (GO / NO GO), retaining veto authority on NO GO decisions as needed.

  • Immediately report safety‑related rework issues and halt activity if required for safety.

  • Participate in criticality matrix analysis and contribute to process P‑FMEA (Failure Mode & Effects Analysis).

  • Develop and maintain Quality Control Plans/Initiatives during operations and maintenance phases.

  • Ensure all in‑process inspection records are maintained and up to date.

  • Inspect PM (Preventive Maintenance) and CM (Corrective Maintenance) tasks in the field for quality and safety compliance.

  • Support Site Quality Managers in their responsibilities.

  • Manage internal Nonconformance Reports (NCRs): create, characterize, and track to closure using problem‑solving methods (e.g. QRQC, 5 Whys). Facilitate root‑cause sessions with foremen.

  • Participate in customer inspections when required.

  • Collect task‑ or component‑specific data via field observations.

  • Learn, abide by, and enforce all site SOPs and Work Instructions; report any violations.

  • Assist in implementing the Quality Assurance Program and new quality initiatives within your shift.

  • Train and qualify Operations & Maintenance teams in self‑inspection practices.

  • Manage dynamic checklists for self & workstation inspection.

  • Conduct workstation audits and present findings in shift handover.

  • Support inspections for special projects (e.g. contractor work) when necessary.

Key Performance Metrics

  • Complete documented in‑process inspections for all planned PM/CM tasks during your shift.

  • Generate NCRs for all nonconforming activities and follow up with foremen.

  • Lead QRQC and root‑cause analysis activities for all NCRs; coordinate corrective action tracking.

  • Contribute to the APSYS board updates each shift.

  • Ensure the scorecard for PMs is updated by shift end.

  • Communicate findings, NCRs, Return-of-Experience (REX) reports, and recommended actions in shift passdown.

  • Drive reductions in Cost of Non‑Quality (CONQ) per unit toward defined objectives.

  • Meet APSYS score targets for industrial quality requirements.

  • Conduct safety tours to engage with personnel and reinforce safety awareness.

Required Skills & Experience

  • Experience in QC / QA roles in industrial manufacturing or field operations.

  • Strong familiarity with NCR / root‑cause methodologies (QRQC, 5 Whys) and FMEA.

  • Ability to interpret and enforce SOPs, quality standards, and safety rules.

  • Excellent attention to detail, problem solving, and analytical skills.

  • Ability to work collaboratively with operations, maintenance, management, and contractors.

  • Strong communication skills—able to present audit findings and corrective actions clearly.

  • Integrity, initiative, and commitment to safety and continuous improvement.
